Those who have or know Dell laptops?

Hey, well I ordered my Studio 15 Laptop, thought id start a new thread cos the previous one seemed to start another windows vs rest debate lol :p

1. How are dell in terms of build quality, Ive read some stories on the net regarding they are not built properly all the time - I think I'm talking about quality assurance throughout the factories when they build it - I havent heard anything bad on the studio 15 apart from a slightly flex in the keyboard....?

2. I have already received an order acknowledgment, how long until the processing is done before they send me an order confirmation stating the work has begun on my laptop? I mean one of the payments gone through in my card.....

Thanks in advance for all answers :D

I have a Dell Vostro 1700. Its about a year old now and in terms of quality of build, its excellent.
I can't remember how long the confirmation took but it was only a few days I think.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 that is now nearly 5 years old.

Structurally it is well built but it has needed four new motherboards and one new disk drive over the years.

Fortunately I took out their inexpensive extended warranty as otherwise I would be very unhappy.

Their next business day on site repair service is excellent.

    Ditto; Dell's are rock-solid.

However, when I upgraded the memory on this Vostro 1700, it facilitated the removal of the keyboard

It wasn't as difficult as I imagined but why would Dell think of hiding one of the memory DIMM's under the keyboard?

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.
  • I ordered a Studio 15 for my son for his Christmas, although I bought it from the Outlet site. Saved £100 over new build price.

4 weeks went by and I still hadn't received it. For some reason it got stuck in their system. In the end they had to put the order through manually. They did upgrade the warranty to "3 years in home" for free though, which I think is around £70 extra.

Delivery took 8 working days once the order was put through.

From the little time I've spent loading up my sons stuff, I have to say it's a very nice laptop. Whether it's sturdy enough, only time will tell.

I've worked on a couple, & 2 of my mates have Inspiron 4000 series notebooks. I was impressed with the build quality (compared to similarly priced Advent models). Battery life is superb too.

A few months ago PC PRO magazine tested a range of budget priced laptops ie. sub £400 & Dell came out on top for build quality. In fact the Dell Inspiron 1525 was their best buy closely followed by a Fujitsu-Siemens model which is no longer available.

I ended up buying the Dell Inspiron 1525 but with a higher spec than the one tested. I paid £449 from Tesco Direct & I am very happy with it.

I don’t see the problem with that, unless you have a keyboard that is tricky to remove.

Removing the keyboard on my Dell Inspiron 8600 is very easy and no more difficult than removing the memory cover plate on the base.

And I don't have to turn the laptop upside down.

I occasionally remove the keyboard to give it a good clean and I have also upgraded the memory so I have done both.

Neither takes more than a few seconds.
