I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on Corfu. We are considering Greek Islands as an holiday. Corfu appeals as its the closest to the U.K.
So for the people who have been. What were the best and worst bits of your holiday in Corfu?
We havent ruled out other Greek Islands, and if anyone can recommend and others please do so.
Thankyou for your help.

We went to Roda (north of the island) in 2004 and wouldn't go back again in a hurry. The beach wasn't very nice, we hired a car and found a nice beach Ag georgious on west coast, huge sands but bad current, oh struggled in not too deep water and he is strong swimmer, so prob ok if you have tiny people who just paddle and build sand castles. We didn't go much on Sidari either, but then what suits one person doesn't another! maybe the more southerly you go the better it gets.0

i have stayed at agios geordios north which was lovely and quiet and kavos (which wasnt!) i love corfu as its green and still very greek which is nice. you still see the ol women on donkeys and all the men playing back gammon etc and you can get out and about in the mountains if you hire a car.

a funny note about corfu ,when we had the misfortune of stopping in Kavos (never spent much time in resort though to be honest to escape the madness such as the drunken youths trying to tip our coach over when we arrived!) we used to pass a village on the way in and there was a handwritten sign on the right saying beach 5km etc that used to change to 1km etc so we decided to find the beach one day. well after about an hour through the wilderness we did find the beach and it was lovely, very windswept and abandoned so spent a bit off time there and drove back where we passed the old men and their sign chorltling madly at us. luckily for them we did find it funny also as it was more 20km at least but they obviously liked to watch tourists go off on wild goose chases with their fake sign!
I went to Kefalonia on a day trip, it is nice but not as green as corfu so was a bit disapointed from that aspect but it was very quiet, remember going to the main town and even though there was a square of people you could have heard a pin drop as there was no noise! it was a bit spooky to be honest.
i have been to Zante and again stopped at Laganas (noisy but the best beach for kids ive ever seen as it shelves out so you can go for ever and no deeper than your knees then it comes back up like an island you can walk on then the sea drops below so gives the illusion of walking on water. we stopped in Vasilikos as well and that was nice as very quiet out there and green and near the turtle beach which you can walk to.
we went to Halkidiki this year and i have to say i was dissapointed scenery wise as the whole area before you get to halkadiki is a dump really, we stopped in Palouri which again was green and quiet but unfortunately i think it is green because it rained so much. 12 days out of 14 and it was my moms wedding out there so a miracle occured as we left in the wedding car ........the sun came out! the only village of prettyness is afitos really there, i didnt think much of Hanioti and Pefkori was scary as i went with oh for a meal and the streets were full of gangs of men just staring and it was quite intimidating. im not sure if these men are eastern european immigrants though as didnt look greek but its the first time ive been to a place with such a threatening atmosphere.***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
Parga on the West coast of Greece and Lefkas (Lefkada), an island joined to the mainland by a bridge are within easy reach of Preveza Airport. We did a two centre holiday and liked both of these resorts.
We have stayed in Corfu once, but that was at a timeshare/all-inclusive resort which is also the Water park, Aqualand. This resort is in the middle of the island but we enjoyed the ease of getting to the water park and then being able to go to some proper Greek/Corfiot tavernas. Not even wrong0 -
I went to Corfu many, many years ago - we stayed in Kavos, which was not very nice, but we hired mopeds and drove around and found some lovely beaches. We also went on a boat trip to the mainland and sailed around the islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, which was lovely.0

We've been to Corfu a couple of times. First time was Dassia - pebbly beach, loads of restaurants (= lots of competition, thus v cheap to eat!) but also "young" & quite noisy in parts until the early hours.
Second time was Glyfada on the opposite coast - absolutely stunning beach but not much there other than a couple of hotels so you probably need a car to make the most of it; it was much quieter than Dassia.
Paleokastritsa is also beautiful.
We also enjoyed Alykes in Zante - seemingly a million miles away from the party nightlife in Laganas.
It all depends on what you are looking for? Do you want to party all night & eat english food or enjoy a relaxing holiday on the beach with beautiful scenery & authentic, delicious Greek food?0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
We always hire a car when we go abroad. We like to explore. I'm into beautiful scenery and beaches. We have a dd who is 7, so I dont want noise and discos.
I've also been looking at Skiathos and Kefalonia and Halikidiki.
I dont want somewhere too remote though, as dd has asthma and also is a nightmare eating.0 -
Brits like it and have mainly turned it into Blackpool with sun, better places to go in Greece, just look for somewhere not popular with the brits, Parga has already been suggested, also Lefkas. Just depends what you want? if you want boozed up chavs, humungeous females with tatts and burger with chips, Corfu is lovely for that.
Kefalonia is nice in places, Sami and Fiskardo are ok, bit cosmopolitan and a little expensive, Skiathos is nice but popular due to the mama Mia film,0 -
we stayed in katelios in kefalonia. a very quiet fishing village. plenty of tavernas round the little harbour. there is very little to do except sleep, swim and eat but it is only 20 mins from skala which has everything you might need.0

Nip along to Kefalonia instead....0
