TV Licensing Harrassment

  • I have a number for the TVL as being 0844 800 6707
  • We too have had the threats. You can tell them until you are blue in the face. It makes no difference. They are convinced that we have a dvd player so must have TV. I think someone used the address. I do not even recognise the name. We too are renovating the property. It doesn't have a bathroom. I wish someone would visit. Even then I doubt it would stop them.
  • I think they find it difficult to believe that anyone can live without a TV nowadays. My father doesn't have a telly, but has received numerous 'threatening' letters. He wrote to them, but still the letters arrived. He rang them up and spoke to someone who stated that it was possible he needed a license because he has a computer and therefore that may be capable of receiving a signal (it isn't because it is my old computer and is pretty basic!). In the end he asked them to send someone so that they could prove for themselves that he hadn't got anything remotely capable of receiving TV signals. Surprise, surprise, no -one has been to check, but the letters still arrive regularly.

It does feel like legalised harrassment!

Myth - watch or record live, not own with or without aerial plugged in - see TVL website.
correct ... the amount of misinformation going around about this subject is absolutely incredible, quote from the TVLA website

'You must be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV. It makes no difference what equipment you use - whether it’s a laptop, PC, mobile phone, digital box, DVD recorder or a TV set - you still need a licence.'

you could have receiving equipment in every room in your house, all connected to aerials & you wouldn't be breaking the law, provided you're abiding by the bold section above, it's up to TVLA to prove that you're not & they have no right of entry to your home

best advice to OP & anyone else getting unwarranted mail from them is, don't waste your time or energy, other than to bin it, ignore it

Have a read of http://www.tvlicensing.biz/phpBB3/index.php and get a flavour of what Capita (salesmen) get up to.

    And here are some facts:

i have a similar problem i live in a one bedroom flat with my gf and she has a tv licence now i brought a freview box from argos and now the tv licesing people keep sending me nasty letters and have taken me to court three time saying i dont have a tvlicence ive also had to pay 300 pounds in court fines irang them several times explaining and this morning yet again another letter with scheduled court date for non payment of tvlicecne what cna i do

Whenever you buy and tv equipment (sky box/freeview box etc) you are asked to fill in a form. Because you put your name down, but the licence at the flat (in assuming) is under your gf's name, the TVL database shows that no-one under your name has a licence in that flat.

My step-father lives on a canal boat and bought a freeview box, he registered it at my address in the shop (as he has no fixed address) and the TVL sent him a demand at my address. On the form was a tel. no. All I had to do was ring it, and the automated system said 'press # if you have another licence for this address'.
I didn't need to speak to anyone, and haven't had anything else thru since.

Don't get me wrong; I am all for the TV License and agree is a necessity - but I am against being pestered every five minutes when everybody except Capita know I am not living at the property!

The TV License guys have sent round 5 people already; each one has had to put something through the door to say they've tried to visit; all the idiots need to do is look through the kitchen window and see I have no kitchen!

I'd give them a guided tour; but they'd have to arrive with a hard hat and high vis jacket, otherwise I'd be breaking health and safety rules ;) Wouldn't want anyone getting hurt in my building site!

Had a similar situation, had letters been sent every month or so for over a year whilst renovation was underway, told them multiple times but never got anywhere.

In the end i just let the letters come, nothing came of it in the end, must just be standard letters sent out to scare people without any real threat.
