Unfortunately anyone can post on these threads even if they are technically incompetent. In turn this fools other technically incompetent people. It would would be really good if people who didn't know the answer just kept out of it and stopped confusing people. I know that most people are just trying their best with no malicious intention and are just victims of misinformation themselves. I'm sorry if i've offended anyone but i have to cringe at some of the bull.... on some sites.

If only people obviously as clever as yourself posted on here, then it would be pretty quiet don't you think?
If you think I'm wrong then say so, I don't mind that, I can only post to the best of my knowledge. I did reasearch last year that showed me vented models were better, therefore that it what I said.

There are many clever people on this site of which i learn from too. Many threads are open to opinion and are subjective. However my remarks are about something that is not open to opinion and has objective scientific measurements. I know that you are doing your best and you too are the victim of misinformation. My comments were not aimed at you, they just happenned to follow your post that referred to another site with the duff information. It can be difficult to work out what is good and duff info. I can only say that some people get it wrong, some people get it right and some people can justify what they have claimed. If they can't prove it they may be wrong! Check if someone is right by asking them to explain their claim. People who can are usually happy to explain. Those who can't get defensive or arsy just like when a scientist questions a devoted christian to prove something in the bible.
    Keep up the good work.

  • As i have a MSc in thermodynamics from Warwick i can tell you that he is right in saying that vented ones are more efficient. However he has missed the bigger picture and only considering the drier and not the house as an energy system. If you read his full thread he says that he wanted a condenser one because last time he had a vented one he didn't vent it outside and the room got very hot and steamy. When you correctly vent it all the most of the heat would go outside. Where do you think that heat goes on a condenser one? ALL the heat goes inside the house. Ever heared of latent heat of condensation? This is the heat you gain from converting the vapour back into water. This is what a condenser type does. The bigger picture is that with a condenser drier lost heat from drier = gained heat by house. With a vented one lost heat = warm garden! So the condenser one makes an overall more efficient house.

I read this thread with interest - but wondered about the following. As my freezer is kept in the same room as the tumble dryer this would mean the freezer would have to work harder at keeping cool and have an adverse effect on any efficiencies, wouldn't it?

I have a Hotpoint condenser drier which is about 4 or so years old now and has been brilliant. In fact it's never broken down. Which worries me to say now.

It was only around the £200 mark too.

I have to say I agree with you to a certain extent.

I've been a computer engineer for years now and quite often having running debates with people who think they know all and everything about PC's just because they play the odd game on them etc.

Your point could've been slightly more tactfully phrased though.

We have a condenser which we brought back from our 9th floor apartment in the Netherlands, great unit, but currently not being used much (will be when the 3rd child arrives in 3 weeks)...prefer to use the radiators as they are on part of the day anyway during the winter.

One other thing I like about the condenser is you can easily move it...during the summer it is shipped to the garage to collect dust and the occasional use.
