Negotiating the 3 % fee?

Options
Anyone had any luck with negotiating down the BT on large balance transfers.

I'm thinking specifically of transfering to a Virgin/MBNA card with 0% period.

Experiences/advice appreciated.

I would imagine that would be nearly impossible in this economic climate.

Entirely possible with 'special offers' for existing MBNA customers, but not with the introductory offers.

I've previously negotiated a waiving of the BT fees on JLP & Citi introductory offers, but that was a couple of years ago and before the 'credit crunch'.
  • Virgin Atlantic Amex card from MBNA has a max £50 fee & generous credit limits.

Mine is a standard virgin MBNA mastercard.
    Thanks for the replies.

I intend to clear the amount outstanding (currently at 0%) early in the new year............with a view to transfering a much bigger balance from a Halifax card at the best terms possible.

I'll let you know how successful, if at all, I am. Cheers.

  • It's strange you should bring this up. Last Friday I rang up MBNA to sort out a BT and took it with the standard 3% fee and a low rate, I know for a fact because they told me how much the fee would be and I asked them to confirm it was that rate (I wasn't messing about working out even simple things at the time as I was tired).

It's showing on my card since tonight's update, but it's only showing a balance of what I transferred, they don't seem to have applied the BT fee at all.

It's also not showing up as a transaction yet, so I cant tell if they've done it as the amount including the BT fee instead of with it. ie they've transferred around 92% of my limit and the fee brings it up to the 95% of my limit. Obviously I can't check it at the receiving end just yet because it won't clear to there until probably Monday (I was told up to 6 working days).

I'll wait for it to be displayed in full on my account and then ring them up if it doesn't turn up. I'll need to check the interest rate has been applied correctly and find out what my first payment needs to be. The DD is set up so it shouldn't cause a problem on that score, but I don't want to take chances.

From memory, the BT fee is posted 2 to 3 days after the BT itself is posted.
