It's not the money in IceSave that's killing them.
It's the money that's not in their own staff pension schemes that ensure continuous inflation busting council tax increases into the 22nd Century.0 -

Council taxes are collected by district councils. They don't cover funding for each and every public sector.0 -
Aren't class sizes linked to birth rate and the number of immigrants coming in with school aged children?Glad to see you take so much interest in what I say, even if you don't understand it all.
My post above clearly suggests that cuts in the public sector can be made and economic circumstances will dictate that they should. There's no reason at all why public sector jobs shouldn't go. My objection is simply to people who love to put the boot into public servants, as if they're some kind of harijans who deserve low status.
So far as previous posts go, it was only a week or two ago that I told a newly qualified teacher that she might expect class sizes of 40 or so before too long, like we used to have back in the 70s.
As jobs are going then there will be less immigrants coming into the UK to make it their home and as people in the UK don't seem to like reproducing unless they are extremely rich or very poor then class sizes will stay the same or start reducing naturally.
I was never educated in classes of a large size due to the fall in birth rate after the baby boom years. In fact in the 80's and 90's all the schools in my area where losing teachers either through retirement or forced redundancy. So it will be likely that some trained teachers who want to enter the profession won't have jobs to go to.
The sites of some of the primary schools are now housing developments. Some secondary schools also closed down and though the sites weren't turned into housing developments they are used for something else i.e. adult education, training college
Unfortunately this was a short sighted policy as while my local councils where closing schools down and selling off the land in the early nineties the birth rate started to increase again. Resulting in not enough primary school and secondary school places.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Like seven-day-weekend said above, the Council I work for is constantly shedding a job here and a job there. Budgets are set so that we have to spend about 5% less each year, and in my bit that means cutting staff because we don't have many other outgoings to save on. In a team of 12, one person has gone this year and I suspect another will be going next year. Hopefully not me.
You won't read about this in the news though, only huge cuts make the news.0 -
I would rather keep these people in work at the councils than pay them to sit at home on the dole. If we are over the recession in 2010/11 then the public sector can start to shed their unwanted staff with the hope that they will be able to get alternative jobs (which I won't have to pay for.........).0
