Hi,
trying to print but it tells me to add a printer first. It was working fine but now has stopped. When I try to add printer i get an error message:
"windows cant open add printer. the local print spooler service is not running. please restart the spooler or restart the machine"
I have turned off printer, disconnected usb port and restarted pc but no joy - any ideas????
I'm running xp

Is the printer actually 'trying' to run (As in the computer can see it and it lights up etc)
If so, it sounds to me like its jammed up somehow:idea:0 -
no it says the error above -- no jams at all0

Open Start Menu and choose 'Run'
Type 'Services.Msc' in the box and hit OK.
From the list of services that appears, scroll until you see 'Print Spooler'
Right click and choose 'Properties'
Ensure the Startup Type on the 'General' tab is set to 'Automatic', then hit the 'Start' button underneath. This will start the print spooler and ensure that it starts up automatically on boot up.
You should then be able to install and use the printer0 -
is the printer a lexmark? or have you used a lexmark printer in the past - they can upset the print spooler . Whne installing the lexmark software it can make the spooler dependant on the lexmark service and any problems which then occur can cause the spooler to fail to initialise.
I will have a look for the information I had to restart the spoller service which got it going again for me.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0
