Drain hole blocked.

I have a Hotpoint fridge/freezer auto defrost 9 years old, model FFA70.
The little hole to drain the defrost water is full and running over the top in the fridge compartment.
I have put a wire down until it will go no further, however it is still blocked.

Anyone had this problem and solved it?

Thanks.

The drain hole has a pipe leading down to a dish on top of the compressor. The heat from the compressor evaporates off the water in the dish. All of my fridges have suffered from the same problem as yours but it's easily fixed by poking with a wire or drinking straw. Perhaps the wire you're using isn't long or thick enough to poke out the gunk?

Had an exact same problem with an auto defrost Zanussi .

What I discovered was that it was not a pea or whatever, blocking the outlet pipe, but the machine was not going through its defrost cycle.

Try this first. Put a tablespoon of salt in the area around the top end of the drain tube. This will melt the ice in that area and also run down the tube to melt any ice in there. The defrost cycle on mine now works due to my turning the thermostat UP from the minimum of 1, to a reading of 3 (on a scale up to 7) . I tried this because someone years ago had the same problem, and cured it in this fashion.

A problem can also occur with fridge freezers or freezers in garages etc, if the outside temperature is too low. I believe that then they don't turn on!

Hope this helps, if not , it's cost you nowt!;)
  • Thanks Dave that salt idea seems ok, I will give it a go.

    Again thanks.
