Windows SP3 question

I've just had one of those "updates are available" notifications, and, remembering the problems that there were back in the days of the infamous SP2, and initial problems when it was first launched, wonder whether any of the more techie members can advise me as to whether it's safe to install this or not?

Have people experienced problems with this new version, or is it OK?

sorry, but I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to computer stuff.

thanks in advance for any advice!:o

Well if you don't install it, you're open to a whole raft of exploits.
  • I have it on one of my machines, seems ok, no more or less reliable than with sp2, but with, apparently, a few more exploits blocked. no reason not to install

Yeh, I've seen lots of SP3 installations and all have been fine -
as long as you have a legitimate version of XP.
  • download it and then revisit MS Update to ensure there are no more waiting.

    No issues at all found.

I tried numerous times to install SP3. It would almost finish the install then tell me something was wrong and spend another hour uninstalling it !!

After umpteen tries it went in, had no problems since. Didn't do anything to the machine in the mean time.
  • Wow! what a wonderful community you all are - thanks so much for all the prompt replies:j

I'll go ahead and install it then, (my copy of XP is official) I was just worried because I remember when the SP2 pack first came out there were loads of problems, and people were saying don't install it until MS have ironed out the teething problems.

I'd like to "thank" you all officially - but don't know how to do it...that's how ignorant I am. Perhaps someone could tell me how one does that?

    :D

ahem...just noticed the "thanks" button on the bottom of signature lines...am now departing covered in embarrassment....

It was released in May, but teething problems should be pretty much ironed out before releasing a service pack.

As with anything Windows related, there will always be a few configurations (out of the millions available) which will have problems, but you are extremely unlikely to have one of them.

How strange that I've only just had the notification of the update if it was released in May!!!!

I've had loads of other updates in the meantime, and always religiously install them....
  • microsoft link I seem to recall the developer distro was released a week or so before the 'normal' one, bear in mind US dating, so 5/6/08 = 6th May 2008
