drive has stopped working

My dvd rw drive has stopped working its a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S ATA Device [CD-ROM drive]. it was working fine yesterday and today it wont load a disk, the disk hasn't been removed from the drive since it was last working.
I have tried a music cd but no joy. when a disk is inserted it just clicks and spins at a slow speed but never really "revs" up. I have tried a lens cleaner disk but no help. The pc is 18 months old and the drive used every day, but rarely opened as I only use the one program. It does open and close as normal.
Any ideas?

Have you rebooted the PC since last using the DVD drive?

If so, I'd remove the disk and try uninstalling and reinstalling it in Device Manager in the Control Panel.

If that doesn't work, I'd say it was worn out and needs replacing.

    HTH.

Take the drive out of the PC. Take the top lid off it and you'll see a small round glass circle bit near the middle -( may need to lift up the metal plate above it) . Get a cotton bud, rest the tip on the glass and rotate slowly. Pop it all back together.

Lense cleaners are fine but don't remove grease or heavy dust. If you've got people who smoke, a lense cleaner is useless.

This regularly happens to my Lite-on DVD drive and it isn't used at all as I have Sony DVD RW installed and use that most of the time.

When it happens to me I simply go to device manager and refresh the hardware until the drive is showing. Hope that helps.

looks like it has packed in. I will get a replacement (only about £15). when it comes to swapping them over do I just pop out the old one and reconnect the new? will I have to install software all will windows automatically search the web for it? whenever i've done these "simple" tasks in the past they have always gone horrible wrong !

If you buy a new drive it will probably come with an installation disk and maybe even some kind of disk management or media playing software, but if you just unplug the old and plug in the new, XP or Vista may well cope OK with the change.

If it doesn't, then you might need to use the installation disk for the drivers.

Make sure you get an ATA drive (also known as IDE) and not the newer SATA type which are now much more common (different connectors)
