allergy help ???

i think i may be allergic to raspberries

a few weeks ago i had rasperry jam and the next morning i woke up and my face was swollen and my knees and feet were aching , well i went to the doctors and she asked if i have ate or touched anything diffrent to normal.

and i normally have strawberry jam instead i had raspberry, and i was wallpapering the day before,
so she said it could be either.and she gave me some piriton which i took for 3 days . still i woke up the following day with a swollen face and aching feet. and for the next few days by nose and cheeks were tingly but everything went back to normal ...
til this morning, i woke up and didnt feel quite right, got to the bathroom and my face was swollen again and joints aching.

yesterday i had raspberry jam and a bakewell tart.
so i started on the piriton again , only aloud 3 a day ,so i took one at 8 , 12 and 5pm . from 9pm i started to feel all tingly again in the nose and cheeks ,i looked in the mirror and the swelling is starting to come up again .

so, i phoned my mam whos an ECP and asked her advice and she said take some clarytin (prob spelt wrong) and see how i am in the morning , i took that at about 10pm and still feeling tingly.

any how just wanting to know if anyone else has an allergy to raspberries?

thanks pink

  • If tingling gets any worse at all or any more swelling especially around you neck or mouth go to A&E.
DON'T eat any more raspberries please!!!!!!
I had a similar situation with bananas years ago and ate a desert with Banana in without realising and ended up in intensive care after developing anaphylactic shock.

Please don't eat any more and go back to your GP and discuss with them you may need allergy tests, its a long wait on NHS but they will be able to confirm if it is the raspberries and if allegic to anything else.

    Good luck

  • Good idea about staying away from all berries.
Get allergy tests done through your GP much more accurate and safer.
Hope you are feeling better I know how scary allergies can be.

The Holland and Barrett tests saved my life...i was bright red for 2 whole years, saw NHS consultants and they did nothing - Holland and Barrett tested me and it was milk, alcohol and orange juice and within 2 days I was well again. The NHS blamed my father - sorry but that's my job not theirs!

10 years later I started to eat small amounts of milk and cheese, and after a couple of years I could eat normal amounts of both. Alcohol and orange juice still get me though.
  • well i phoned holland and barret and they have no appointments till feb and its quite expensive £35-£45, so i phoned the health food shop near to where i live and they have appointments next wednesday, so i made an appointment for 12 next wednesday and its only £20.

as it happens the swelling is quite mild thank god and i havent felt to bad today, no tingling at all, so will just take the piriton tonight and tomorrow and hopefully i should find out next week what i have an intolerance too. fingers crossed

I would strongly suggest you cancel your appointment with the the 'health food shop' and make an appointment to see your GP. The difference? If you see a doctor on the NHS, you will find out for sure if you have an actual allergy, what it is, how serious it is and you'll get a prescription for medication that will treat said allergy effectively. If you're exempt from NHS charges, live in Wales or you have a pre-paid prescription certificate, it's essentially free. If not, well, six quid to treat an allergy is six quid well spent. Allergic reactions, no matter how serious or mild they are, will always make you feel miserable.

Piriton and clarityn are both pretty much the same thing. They're quite mild antihistamines - you can buy them over the counter. If you suffer a genuine allergic reaction and can't feel yourself responding to them - you need to see a doctor anyway, because anything stronger is prescription only.

I would be extremely dubious of any private company offering a 'test' for allergies/intolerances when you can get this for free with very little hassle. If you need a hip replacement, fair enough, you may end up on a long waiting list and going private could be a good option. But for an allergy test? Usually you can make an appointment in the next few days or even a nurse can juggle her appointments and squeeze you in. Patch testing, okay, that might be more problematic to get squeezed in for, but blood tests for allergies take very little time at all. They're also painless. Really. If you hate needles because of innoculations etc, it's not the same thing. Those might hurt a bit, blood tests don't.

Avoid berries for now if you do think you might have an allergy and wait for the results of your NHS test before deciding whether you can or cannot reintroduce them to your diet.

Please avoid the quacks! I can picture your local health food store now, with someone telling you that you're 'intolerant' to 300 different things and advising you eat only from their range of 'magic food' and selling you some 'magic pills' to boot.
  • Yes, wait to get an appointment with your GP and don't eat any more raspberries!

On unusual allergies, I'm allergic to limes and have an intolerance of pineapple!

Sorry, have to disagree - but then that's all the fun of a random internet forum.

The health food shops don't use needles, and will give an indication of foods to cut out - it's not about buying more stuff but about not eating/using stuff that are causing the problem.

I've been through this myself, the NHS could/would not help and left me in agony for 2 years - with the health food indications I was better in 2 days.
  • ive been to the doctors and they give me a big bottle (100 tablets) of piriton and won't send me for a allergy test yet.

i paid £7.10 for perscription , but well worth it. recomended i keep food diary aswell.

£20 for food tolerance test in the health shop is for my piece of mind not the doctors. i would like to know what foods to keep off so i dont have to keep taking the piriton.
