Hi All,
I would be grateful if someone could help me. Back in June I was diagnosed with Cancer and I have just finished Chemotherapy, I am awaiting further test results to confirm that the cancer has gone.
I am currently suffering the aftermath of Chemo and was not the same person I once was prior to the cancer.
I am currently on DLA and on half pay from my employment, I have recently signed up to Employment And Support Allowance.
My question is, I have just applied for Medical Retirement from the Civil Service (My Employer) and I just wanted to check, would I still be eligible to claim Employment and Support Allowance or is it capped till a certain age ? I am 52 by the way.
Do I have to submit medical certificates to keep claiming ESA ? When do I have to stop submitting them ?
I do hope these people understand that Chemo is a tough thing to go through and there is no way I can go back to work after what I have been through
I would be grateful for any help and advice

you have to continue to provide sick notes until they tell you they're happy for you to stop.
my DH was bumped up to the long term of IB last year (after the 26/28 weeks of the lowest rate), but this was because the doctors issued a DS1500 around Easter (meaning they didn't expect him to live past the end of Summer 2007). The fact he lived past that date (finally lost his battle 3 weeks ago) didn't count against him, and he didn't get moved back on to a lower rate.
So I would say they do understand that cancer and chemo can cause major problems, but it possibly depends on reports from your GP and Oncologist as well.
ETA: He had been made redundant about 6 weeks before he was diagnosed, so never had any kind of pension coming in to complicate things.Cheryl0 -

someone else might confirm if i`m right about this but i understood that if your illness started before 27th october 2008 you could still claim I/B and not ESA??0 -
Woodbine.....It's not if your 'illness' started before 27th Oct, but whether you can get backdated sicknotes...Oops!! Should I have posted this??? Some users don't think I shouldn't be offering advice due to my occupation!!!0
