Hi Everyone,
Sorry about this, but I have bought one of the medion laptops from woolworths quite recently which has a wireless facilty and I have a PC downstairs connected to NTL Broadband via a separate cable modem.
I need an idiots guide on how to set up my laptop so that the kids can get lost in space upstairs somewhere!!
I have read the other forums on wireless technology but it is too technical for me!!
i think I need a wireless router??? and a card that you push somewhere????
Do I need a card in both laptop and PC???
Where do I get a cheap one from??
Which holes/sockets do I push them into on the computer?????
Do I need to load ntlworld's installation CD onto my laptop, (I have requested a new one just in case!)
and finally, if any of your dear people out there have go a spare two months!! could you list it in order for me so that I can follow it easily.
Sorry about this, but I would really woul be grateful to anyone who could spare the time to advise me, and my kids are doing my head in because they want to go on MSN to chat to their mates on the laptop. PLEASE HELP!!!!
thanks in advance x

these wireless routers are for NTL
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a842x1y0z1p0s0n0m0
good place to start before you go searching for the best prices
this connects to the downstairs PC and replaces your existing NTL modem and your PC will plug into it like it did into the NTL modem
the laptop already has wireless so nothing new is required for that, it just needs setting up to "speak" to the wireless router, there is a guide to wireless networking at the top of this Techie part of the forumEx forum ambassador

If your laptop has wireless built in you won't need a card for the laptop.0

I am on NTL and have their standard cable modem. Once it was installed & working I went wireless: Installed a Dlink Wireless Router (there are many brands - even Tesco Extra has one in stock).
1. Plug laptiop straight into the NTL modem via suitable cable eg the PC's cable. The laptop should have a standard wired network socket on the back.
2. Install the NTL broadbad CD just like you originally did for the PC.
3. Disconnect the cable.
4. Here's the techie bit - have to use the User Guide of the Wireless Router to access the Router's setup via your Laptop's Web Browser, via the 'address' in the Guide. Ensure that the wireless facility on your laptop, which you mentioned is built-in, is 'enabled'.
5. Key thing to do is 'clone' the laptop's MAC address to the Router - they should be an option to do this. It could just be that the User Guide makes it even easier than I'm saying here.
6. Now try the Internet from the Laptop.
7. Reconnect main PC to a spare socket on the Router (not the modem) or also install a wireless card in the PC. A USB wireless dongle can be plugged onto the outside of your PC.
8. If you get the wireless part working, eventually you should add a Key to the Router and to the PC + laptop so that the communication is encrypted. This a a bit complicated but ensures that your neighbour does not piggy back on your broadband for free and /or read your comoputer files.
If you get stuck, contact one of those Fix Your Computer people who seem to advertise in the local newsagent and bargain a good price for him to set it up. You should not have to pay much over £50 for a wireless router.
Finally, if you are going to let kids unsupervised on the net, consider adding Netnanny from NTL. It costs. There are other freeware products out there - I use iProtectYou but it is a little fiddly to set up.

Hi
You need to buy a wireless router, i recently bought a belkin router which had excellent instructions (with pictures!!) showing you how to set it up. Basically the broadband connection goes into the router and then into your main pc. But really they do have good instructions. I got mine from PC world, it was very reasonable and shops will have ones on special offer as many people are getting laptops now.
You do not need another installation disc neither will you need another card for the laptop.
hope that helps a wee bit0 -
