Basically, I'm cooking chips for the first time tonight (go me) but I can't stay in the kitchen because there seems to be 'fumes' coming off the baking tray and it's stinging my eyes to b*ggery!
The tray is warping in shape and a couple of the corners are basically rising so it's not flat in shape! This also happens when I use a different tray to cook stuffed chicken on.
However, when I place something wrapped in foil on one of the trays it doesn't happen. Just seems to be when food is directly on it.
When I open the oven door, it's a bit smokey especially around the grill element (top of the oven).
Is it just crap trays, or the oven, or me?
It's really hurting my eyes!
Edit: I've had to turn the oven off and stop cooking coz it's so painful.

One out of Wilkos, £3 odd, one from Tesco probably similar, maybe £4! :think:0 -
dirty or teflon fumes.0

Are you sure it's not the fat splashing onto the element at the top of the oven and burning? I used to have an oven that did this and the smell could make you gasp. It'd get really smoky too. Could be that you just need to clean the oven, and it's nothing to do with the trays.0

No teflon, if that's what they are made of. One is almost brand new. The only food contact it has had is garlic bread.

I don't know. :undecided
The tray was only in the oven 5 minutes when it started hurting. There was just a bit of sunflower oil on the tray. It was only in the middle of the oven but I really don't know! :undecided
Why would the trays lose shape though? :think:0 -
I think it's a case of crap baking trays Scouser;) They really shouldn't be warping and bending in the oven, definitely a sign of poor quality.
I'm afraid with baking tins you get what you pay for. I paid a lot for Mermaid baking trays -can't remember how much as it was years ago but they're still going strong and I don't expect to have to replace them.0 -

Hmmm. Guess I better invest in some quality ones.
Might have to get some new eyes while I'm at it! :rotfl:0 -
I have some that warp...i tend not to worry about it#
But if they're hurting your eyes, that's really dangerous....surely it could be a manufacturing issue as theyre brand new? maybe they have something on that they shouldn't? I would find which tray is causing it and contact the manufacturer.August grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -

Both are doing it. It's weird, coz like I say, put food on it like garlic bread and it's fine. Anything wrapped in foil it's fine. But anything directly on them and it's a nightmare.
Might borrow my mums to check it's not the oven before investing in some! :think:0
