How to get "factory settings"

Options
Hi wonderful techies

Right, what it is we are going to be buying a new comp soon and will be selling ours on to a mate. What I want to know is how to reset it all back to factory settings. Can I just do a system restore back to the first available date (wont be that far its a fairly new comp) or is it more complicated than that. I just want it so all the carp we have put on is gone.

We are on windows XP.

Thanks

Insert the factory restore disc into the PC and then restart the PC
and boot from the CD... if it doesnt work correctly you have the wrong disk installed.

Right I have looked in my box of CDs and the only ones that I don't have a clue of what is on there are

    Foxconn 1.0- includes

chipsetsets drivers, device drivers, super utilities, adobe acrobat, Direct x, Norton internet security.

    And

    win windows- includes

modem drivers, modem manual, panda platinum AV, fax talk and adobe acrobat.

If it is not one of these two which I don't think they are, what do or what can I do?

I am in the same position, i want to give my old computer for free to a friend. It's an old window 98 SE. I do not want to insert system restore as it will wipe my office application program and again I do not wish to leave personal details in it. What happens if I leave my internet bt surftime dial up connection, will I get charged if she uses it. Thanks

You shouldn't get charged as the number is dialled is either an 0870 number that charges you via phone bill or an 0800/0870 number that will only connect to your a/c if you dial from your line. Prob best thing to do is to format hard drive and reinstall the original software if the o/s is not configured to reset to factory defaults.
