Brake disc minimum thickness recommendations

The manufacturer's quoted min thickness for discs on my car is 11.4mm, but I just bought a new pair of discs (non-oe [EBC]) and on the rim of those it says min thickness 10.5mm (but they are still 12.8mm new). Going by that I could still have an extra 0.9mm on my current discs.

I'm changing them anyway - but it just made me wonder if the manufacturer's recommendations are more for the benefit of dealers and kwikfit etc, than for their customer's.

I am of course not suggesting anyone neglect their brakes as they have obvious importance :)

Hadn't thought of anything like that. Trouble is the 10.5mm probably won't be readable by the time it gets there :D although I'll make a note. Car will probably be scrap by then anyway lol.
  • for the price of skimming discs its probably false economy, just as cheap replacing them anyway. then you know they are fine.

Was going to say the same, we have discs for the same car with different tolerances now they have changed the metal used.
