    Even with discount they're still not worth it - they're the biggest rip-off on the railways.

    An example (YP fares):
    VIC-GTW on GTW Express: 30 mins £11.15
    VIC-GTW on Southern: 31 mins/36 mins £7.20

    A no-brainer really.
  • I don't know about that, Virgin trains must be up there contesting the No1 rip off place;
    Holyhead to Manchester Pic Advance Single £15.30 Virgin
    Holyhead to Manchester Pic Advance Single £11 ATW

    Virgin are quicker 35min average but you do pay for it

    If it's over half an hour I can understand why some people (though admittedly not me) would be willing to pay extra, but for between 1 and 6 mins as in my example? Only people with more money than sense. Or tourists.

    However, Virgin does reach it in other ways...
    LIV-EUS peak-time train, adjacent seats, walk-on fare:
    railcard holder £43 saver return
    normal adult almost £200 std open return

    And then of course there's the old Shotton/CTR 'short'...

    Still works, but not as good as a saving it use to be :o

    If you're really that desperate to travel on Gatwick Express, London to Three Bridges route Any Permitted is cheaper than London to Gatwick.
