£88+vat. Avis refueling charge

Just received my husbands bill from Avis and they've charged £88.15+ vat for re-fueling. He doesn't do small print unfortunately, causes all kinds of problems...
But is £88 reasonable?
Total cost for 3 day uk hire of a vauxhall was £249.43.
Is there anyway of getting them to reduce this, has anyone tried?

Hi,
Most car hire companies require you to return the car with a full tank of fuel, assuming it was full to start with. If they had to refuel, the cost is not just for fuel, but for staff time too.

Why didnt he fill it up?
Most rental companies charge around £1.50 a litre to refuel, The £240 seems a lot for a 3 day rental tho...£80 a day?0
