Hi all.
I hope someone can offer me some advice here. I want to get my O/H a new PC. He mentioned something about connecting a PC to the TV so the TV would essentially be the PC monitor.
I've found THIS at Lidl. Can anyone tell me if it is the right thing? Also, is it a good deal? I thought it seamed a little pricey considering it doesn't have a monitor
Or am I just being a tight (_Y_)
TIA

Yes you can connect it to a LCD screen like a TV you will probably need a DVI to HDMI cable for better picture quality or a SVGA to SVGA cable assuming the tv has VGA output. and will only support VGA for a PC as one of my LCD will only support pc in VGA mode not HDMI. It also depends on graphics card having a dvi output nearly all pcs do, but some still dont like the cheap ones and some dells still only have vga output, so you will have to check (DVI output at bottom including VGA)
SVGA to SVGA

DVI to HDMI
For audio as hdmi to dvi cable wont carry audio you will need a cable for that (I will just check)
http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/catalog/cables/35mm-stereo-plug-male-35mm-stereo-plug-male-12m.html (thats assuming tv supports this) My two LCDs do.
DVI output on a graphics card (just the top on normally applies sometimes they have two dvi)
VGA on a PC also some tv have VGA

If hubby is a PC nerd then getting them a PC before Christmas is unlikely to make them happy. There are processors, in the pipeline, that are 'leaps and bounds' above the specifications available today. Christmas is a good time to get rid of all the stuff that they could not shift/sell.. I recommend woolly socks and gloves.

:rotfl: :rotfl: He's not a PC nerd anymore ... he doesn't have the time. But, I do know a new PC is what he really wants ... and what will make him happy! I thought the Lidl one was quite current with quad processor thingy!
Thanks Antispam ... I will have a look at the links. I hadn't thought of all the cables that would be needed. Wouldn't have been much fun if I bought one and then coulnd't get it set up on Christmas day

Err just one question. Is your TV a HD TV? If not, DO NOT DO THIS.0

I am not saying that what is on offer is not good value. I am not in a position to judge. This is in part because I have would have to divulge my postcode to Lidl to log on to their site, to see the article they are selling.

Does the Ops OH using the TV for gaming, surfing, watching dvd etc
The reason I ask is whilst the tv may be fine for surfing odd page, and dvd are great. For gaming and surfing the net regularly I think it will become a pain
I have my tv on a pc not main pc, I use it for watching HD media, photos anything else may become uncomfortable at least how mine is set up watching tv from sofa
For a start the distance between you and pc it would be hard to view fonts unless they were enlarged that's on mine 40" tv and only about 4 feet away. Gaming well you need a desk for fragging and playing games at least I find that way.
If is just for viewing pictures, video you can do this view a DVD player if you get the right one my Philips 5990 plays mp3,divx,XviD, DVD and will upscale the video too0 -

Hi,
It's pretty much all of the above and watching online catch-up shows. Another thing we do a lot of is chat to family abroad via video link. Thought it would be nice to get us all on the screen for them, also, would be easier than us all huddling around a laptop
ThanksI can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!I thunk I've made you think for a minute!:j :rotfl: :j0 -
well you can do some of that via other means I really think playing games on a PC on a large screen would on some games at least be a pain due to the way most pc games are used. A lot of pc games rely on mouse/keyboard so you need some where to rest them on. Yes you can get small keyboard with a touchpad in and wireless I have one and they are fine for odd thing, you can also get wireless gaming joypads and they work great. But a big screen is much better suited for playing dvd, Mpeg4, odd web page etc.
I play my games on a 24" LCD about 6 inches a way from me on a desk and its big.
Playing dvd's and even music/jpegs can be done on dvd players, some play mpeg4
I have a pc in my living room, but I wouldn't use it for gaming okay I admit it isn't the most powerful pc, I use to use it for playing media etc and still do with HD stuff with VLC player, but I use a dvd player for most things now, even my freesat box plays media now from a usb pen drive, like photo's mp3 etc even nboots up like a pc
In the next few years with you see LCD's etc playing different types of media from different sources in fact is started already and they will get much more sophisticated and being like a pc inside0
