essay help/tutorial

Options
hello again,

Honestly, I thought things were getting better today but I went to see my (new) dyslexic tutor and had the most frustrating session ever. She wanted to look at interpreting titles etc which I thought was very good, she brought up some stuff on the web from Sheffield uni about it and we looked at it ... this was all fine but then for another 50 mins she insisted on making me interpret this title/question they had used, which was very straight forward and not at all like one I ever get. I would have prefered to do one of my own which I was struggling with ... but she didnt want to do that!

I now have a half written essay which I am still struggling with....

I honestly don't know if this women has a clue about my course as she keeps going on about me quoting stuff .... but thats what my course DO!! We read a journal, interpret and then use it to support our argument .... our own opinion comes in indirectly as we are not allowed to use "I"

I seem to struggle with putting my words into text, and making it clear and I am really frustrated that I am no getting help with overcoming that and that Ive got to sit there for an hour listening to her waffle on about something which I cant apply to my course ...

She says that tutorial work is not supposed to be related to academic work, but in the past other tutors have guided me in working on something (as theyve no experience in the area anyway) which is much more helpful.

And before anyone says ... you werent happy with the last one either, it must be U... I know but the reason I changed finally was because she was too patronising for words - she actually gave me a demonstration on How to use a book index - Honestly!! The following week was going to be How to hold a Pen all on Your Own!!

I just dont know what to do about it all now as I have depended on this help so much in the past.

I really came on to ask for help on my essay title - Why do the sexes differ in offending behavior?

Did you try bluntly telling her that all you want is help with your specific style of essays?? My friend's dyslexia tutor just goes through her work with her and shows her how to do course-specific research.

If that fails could you go and speak to whoever runs the support at your institution and tell them exactly what you want?

I'm sorry for the demon I've become but you should be sorry for the angel you are not.
  • I do and she says that tutorial work is not allowed to relate to academic work and she seems to have interpreted it in the most extreme way possible .... in previous sessions with other people it has never been a problem - Ive sat and gone through essays for formatting and we've done plans for essays which I will go away and work on later. She also doesnt seem to listen to a word I say which is even more frustrating.

The admin for the uni seem to leave it to the tutor to interpret the "rules" how they choose ... It is the strictest interpretion of the rules though ... she doesnt seem to even want me having a piece of work open on the screen ...

If she does the job which she wants to do then I could employ a monkey to do it because all she seems to want to do is sit and point at a screen saying yes, thats what you have to do - any study skills book could do this.

  • Would you be able to ask her for help in structuring on a Psychology-based question? So that way it would not be one of the questions from your course but it would be something similar? Maybe you could email her and ask her to do this for your next session.

Theyre all different, to be honest I think some of these tutors are just really awkward! There's not much point now as I have the exam next week (its a seen question which I need to prepare) and I just feel really annoyed that she doesnt seem to listen to anything I say....
