Setting up virgin broadband

  • Hey all,

Finally got it working. Technician came out, it turned out the problem was due to a bad connection caused by a loose wire somewhere outside my house.

Problem now however, is that it works with the ethernet connection and i tested it at a download speed of 9Mb/s but when i try to set it up with the Wireless Manager software the signal is so low it can't detect it and tells me to move the computer closer to the router. I can however, find it in Windows if i go to the network and sharing centre and access the internet. However, the signal is low or poor.

Do i have any other options other than to buy a repeater?

try changing the channel the router transmits on - you can do this by accessing your router setup screen - (may need to make sure you are accessing the right network too)

9Mb doesnt sound right. Is it the optical cable? if so then it SHOULD be 'exactly' 10 (Or 20 if thats what you pay for)

if everything is OK and perfect on the network then a 10M connection will get 10 - but thats almost never - so 9 dosnt sound too bad .

i think you guys are confusing mb and mbit.

You have a 10mbit connection which gives you "1mb per second" download speed maximum, not 10mb as such.

Your lucky to see 9mb on your 10mb connection, i never see anywhere near my full 20mb connection speed on virgin. Unless im using flashget or something.

Flick your wireless router onto channel 3 or 6, most are on channel 11 and cause all sorts of conflicts with neighbours. (i got fed up of neighbours access points on my corporate network, so i contained the neighbours meaning my cisco access points flooded/blocked theirs working)

They then complained to me, and thats when i asked them to turn their signals down a bit, now we have no conflicts :rotfl:

Remember as i said above, if you change the device that your connecting to your modem, you need to power off the modem. The MAC Address is then "lost" and it can work iwth the new device.

    Glad its all sorted.
