parking charges in edinburgh town centre

hi
I am looking for some advice on where to park cheaply in edinburgh. I am visiting in the new year and staying at the travelodge in St Marys St, it is £10 for 24 hours which is a bit steep...anybody know somewhere close by but more reasonable....thanks
;)

£10 for 24 hours is very very cheap for Edinburgh. Bite their hand off.
  • Due to the fact that many of the surroundings roads in Edinburgh will be closed during the New Year period I'd also check and see if you can pre-book this.

An alternative would be to park in one of the Park and Ride car parks on the outskirts and take a bus into town for £1.10 per person.

Hiya - this might sound stupid, but depending on length of yr stay, is there an alternative to travelling to Edinburgh by car? There are some good deals on the train at the moment (though limited in some cases, ie National Express who are running a £5 one way deal)...

Also, you can park at the EDI (Edinburgh International Airport) for less than £5/day... (avg is about £3.50/day for pre-booked parking & I've used Secure Air Parks in the past and they were straight up, but there are other companies at the airport)

  • thanks to everyone who have posted a reply, I really need the car unfortunately or I would bus it....I have used the airport parking before but due to circumstances this time I need the car to be handy. I may contact the hotel and just book their place. Can I just take this oportunity to thank everyone again ;)

Check on the Edinburgh City council website - but charges for on-street parking may well be suspended for Jan 1?

How long are you going to be in the city for?
  • edinburgh isnt the most car friendly place ive ever drove, ticket wardens are on your case almost instantly,on street parking costs an arm and a leg,if you can find any.
£10 for 24 hours is very cheap, last time i used 24 hour ncp in edinburgh it was about £25. i would use the £10 shot to be honest, especially if you are taking luggage, the last thing you want to do is carry stuff on and off busses or trains.
    ...work permit granted!
  • I used to work Edinburgh city centre a year ago.

I'm not sure if it has changed - they may have expanded the paid parking area - but I used to park in the roads that link Leith Walk to Easter Road. Most of the time I parked in Albert Street http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=leith+walk&countryCode=GB#map=55.96256,-3.1741|17|4&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:55.96256:-3.1741:17|albert%20street,%20edinburgh|Albert%20Street,%20City%20of%20Edinburgh,%20Edinburgh,%20Midlothian,%20Scotland,%20EH7 , which is closest to the city centre without a parking fee. It's always busy, but I always managed to find a spot here or in one of the roads further down leith walk.

From these streets it is only about a 10 minute walk to princes street.

Hope that helps (and makes sense).

You should be able to check where the controlled parking zones are on Edinburgh council website.
    Looking forward to the future.

The travelodge you mention has postal code of EH1 1TA, which might help search for uncontrolled on-street parking... you might (big might) find space on Carlton Rd which runs from the back of Waverley Station to Abbeyhill / Abbeymount (down near Holyrood) see: Google Map for 33 St Mary's Street

    Otherwise, from: VisitScotland
"There is also an NCP Ltd car park 120 meters from the hotel, operated by Britannia, and a further NCP at St Johns Hill – both are discounted for Travelodge customers."
