Refused First Direct Account

Hi I applied for a First Direct account two weeks ago, without checking my credit record first, as when I last checked in September my Credit Score was 927 or similar and my credit was good.

I applied for a new mobile phone account on 5th November and somehow they ended up credit checking me 4 times with Orange and once each with Vodafone and O2!!

So after I sent the application off I suddenly thought I'd better check my credit report and when I did, it had gone down to 617!! It said it was due to too many checks being carried out! I rang Orangew who agreed to remove the erroneous checks, but they said it will take a few weeks.

Well in the mean time, First Direct credit checked me and obviously refused my application. So now I have been turned down by them and this is another credit check that show up if I want to open another account elsewhere! Once Orange take these extra checks off it should be a good credit score again, but because of the First Direct check, it's still going to be bad iykwim?!

Is there any way I can get First Direct to reconsider their decision once Orange have taken their checks off my report?? With out them having to do another check, as obviously they were looking at incorrect information.

I'm desperate to change banks, as having been with first Woolwich and now Barclays for 5 years, and being in permanent employment for years, I had to fight with them to give me a Debit card, and then another fight for a cheque book, but no guarantee card!! I don't owe a penny and they also charge me £4 a month for the "pleasure" of having their current account!!

BTW the Debt in ,my signature is all in my partners name, and we have always paid on time every month, so there is no black marks on either of our credit histories

First they came for the crack users; but I said nothing. I was not a crack user. Then they came for the heroin users. But I said nothing - I was not a heroin user. Then they came for me. There was no one left to speak for me. (after Pastor Niemoller)

I would suggest that the mobile phone searches have nothing at all to do with FD's decision to reject your application for a current account.

    More likely reasons are:

    1. Your £19,000 debt elsewhere, and

    2. Something else bothers them. Possibly the same thing that is preventing Barclays from giving you a full facility account.

Have you asked FD why they rejected you? If you disagree with their decision, or you have supplementary evidence of your financial circumstances, then appeal their decision.

And one final thing...don't waste any more money on worthless and meaningless credit scores from the CRA's.

EDIT: Just seen your edit*. If you have a financial association with your partner (mortgage, joint loan, joint current account, etc), then their credit rating and history will have been searched and taken into consideration for your FD application.

    * Might be an idea to edit your signature with an explanatory note so as to avoid any future confusion?
  • I agree with YorkshireBoy. If Barclays don't even want to give you a cheque book or debit card, something must be wrong...

First Direct have always been fussier about who they accept as customers - as they are looking for those who fit a certain profile - unlike most banks who accept virtually everybody

If you want to get away from Woolwich/Barclays try another 'high street' bank - perhaps even HSBC.. who own First Direct and you may be able to change from HSBC-->First Direct in future based on your HSBC banking history..

Thanks, I think the reason Barclays didn't give me one is that there are numerous CCJ's registered at my address for the former occupant, who got just about every loan ever and then got repossessed and knocked them all. I have the police or baliffs round at least once a month. For some reason they had never taken him off the electoral register, just added me on!! That has been sorted now.

Just want to get away from Barclays they are soooo rubbish. Their customer service is the worst in the world! Think I'm going to ask FD to appeal my decision.

The previous occupant's CCJ's would not affect you. There is clearly something wrong with YOUR credit. Why are the police coming to your home "at least once a month"? What crimes are you involved in?
