Ebay - buyer not happy with item and has damaged it

Sold an item on ebay. It was a pair of butterfly bookends. Bought from a local antique dealer who informed us they were very collectable. I included this in the listing, along with a clear photograph so the buyer knew exactly what they were getting.
They have messaged us saying the item is like something bought from a market and they're not happy. This is despite the photograph in the listing.
At the end of the message they've also added that they have damaged the item. Basically the brass butterflies clip on to the glass wings and they've damaged the clip. There were plenty of others interested in the item so normally I could have sold it on as a second chance offer but the item is no longer in a sellable condition.
What should I do? Anyone been in this situation.
Have only been selling since the beginning on Novemeber and already fed up with buyers trying to rip me off! I want to be fair cos I buy a lot too but some people are just taking the mick!

What is the buyer asking you to do? Presumably they saw a picture? It's buyer beware isn;t it? I mean, they knew what they were buying!:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

They've just said 'I look forward to hearing your views and what can be done'.
I'll edit my original post in a min so it makes a bit more sense, was so angry when I read their message, wrote out a really snotty reply but counted to ten before I sent it.
To be honest, they're not my thing at all (was bfs mums) but they definetley wasn't cheap looking.
I was thinking of basically saying that a refund could not be given as the item is not in a sellable condition now they have damaged it. Maybe passing on the info of the antique dealer the item was originally purchased from so they could get intouch with them and find out for themselves that they weren't purchased at a 'local market' :mad:0 -

You're not the only one who feels like this, I'm afraid. Did they say what the damage was?Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -
Something along the lines of...
Sorry to hear you're unhappy with them. Unfortuantely as they've been damaged, and there was a clear image of the product in the original listing, then I wouldn't be able to accept a return in this case. If you're unhappy with that decision then please feel free to contact ebay to report the item (insert link to ebay item not as described form) and allow them to conduct an investigation, and I'll cooporate with whatever their outcome is.
Then they'll either give up, or file a claim which you'll win. You're only problem is the "collectable" term. Never really useful putting in subjective comments like that, unless it's a widely known collectable product. Anyway, the guy seems calm enough, I'm sure he won't be too much of a problem whatever you decide.0 -

Have just added this to the original post in the edit. Basically there is a clip at the back of the brass butterflies that clips on to the glass wings and they have broke this clip.0 -
if you go to e-bay answer center, there is a forum there where you can ask this question. i have used it in the past and if your very lucky a person called " Top Cat " will answer that is like, god who's knows all , i had her answer one of mine question , give me a list on right way to get it sorted was so helpful after 3 sleep less nights, can put you of listing !! i think even if it's totally wrong to our minds, buyer's always seem to win . get them to send it back , just refund the price paid not the delivery price or offer to go half and half . they prob keep it end of story . good luckthe truth is out there ... on these pages !!0

Lexilex, I have just had a look at them and I must say that they are lovely and well worth what was paid for them. Firstly, you state on your listing that you do not accept returns, secondly they have broken them so you don't have to do anything. Just tell them that you are sorry, but you do not accept returns and point out the fact they have broken them. If they argue they are going to complain to ebay let them, I doubt that ebay would find in their favour just because they don't like the item now they have it. Keep all emails etc, especially the one where they tell you they have broken it. Also, see if you can get a letter of authenticity from the antique shop where you bought them and also a letter from him stating how much the damage would devalue the item and the cost of repairing it. Good luck, let us know how you get on.0

Thanks everyone for your advice.
I've removed the link now, thought it might get me in trouble. But yes, they were really nice, if you are in to that kind of thing.
Going to post on the answer centre thing now, thanks!0
