My thoughts exactly. A messy house is fine, but my skin crawls when I go round someone's house and the bath is covered in scum or everything in the kitchen looks like it would give you dysentry! People who leave their dirty undies lying around for everyone to see also worry me!
I do a big, thorough clean a few times a year and then once a week I do a quick hoover, change the bed and clean the bathroom. I clean bits of the kitchen whilst I'm waiting for my dinner to cook. The best thing is not to have clutter and then cleaning is a doddle. I have a huge turnout twice a year and stagger down to the dump/charity shop. I'd like to be someone who can travel light.0 -
I try and keep the washing and ironing under control and as long as the bathroom and kitchen are clean i am not too worried about it. My MIL has a spotless house so i dread it when she comes to visit us (but that doesnt happen often anyway) she looks around inspecting things (when she thinks i am not looking). I prefer to be comfortable and not be worrying about every little bit of dust - life is too short.

We've spent the last 3 years renovating our house which takes up a lot of time (think 2 years re-pointing each evening in the summer). We grow our own fruit and veg, and love gardening so we tend to be outside. We try to cook from scratch most nights, I make bread (now butter
)etc at the weekend to last for the week. I am also trying to start a soft furnishings business which will take up a lot of spare time, and when we get our chickens
they'll be a massive commitment.
So, I've suddenly come to realise that I'm not superwoman. I can't do everything I want to do, and be a domestic goddess at the same time! Something has to give and in my case it's the housework.
If you live your life doing what you want, its got to be rare when cleaning comes further up than enjoying yourself and having hobbies and life. Dust is always there for you when you have a dull moment!Panda xx

Alfietinker, it's lovely that you posted that!
I'm much the same, really. I can't imagine hoovering unless I was going to see the difference afterwards! That's where I get my satisfaction from hoovering! In between, I'll pick up larger bits.
Dusting tends to get done when I walk past something and notice the dust.
Ironing, I have no clothes that require ironing.
Cleaning the kitchen, I just wipe down worktops as I go, and though I plan to do the same with the hob, usually that's once a week when I notice it needs doing.
It's only me living there though, and my time is prettymuch my own, so I appreciate that if I was running a household, a little more routine may be required.
My lounge is a tip at the moment. Not unclean, but lots of things out of place...I seem to have mislaid the coffee table! So that's something to look forward to after work!0 -
Just the two of us and a dog in a two bedroom house and keeping the house immaculate is a nightmare that I no longer attempt.
My stepson said to hubby that at his house the minute he gets off the sofa his mum is there fluffing the cushions and if he leaves a drink down its gone before he can return to it. She cleans the house top to bottom every day - including moving furniture, washing skirtings and even polishing the brass stips holding the carpet down in the doorways. He (stepson) even has to use the bathtowel to "polish" the bath when hes finished and put it in the machine
In this house the floors get washed when I have time and inclination(who eats from the kitchen floor?) Dusting gets done when I can write my name in it and the ironing gets done when Im truely bored (rarely) I keep the bathroom and kitchen clean (never tidy) and everyday housework is just putting things away. I work pt, cook a meal every day, have a dog that needs two hours exercise a day and I like to have a life as well, house work is the bottom of my priorities
Guess whos house stepson prefers to be in even though he has to pick up for himself?0 -
I used to have a neighbour who had white units so that she could see the fingerprints to wipe. Needless to say I didn`t enjoy visiting her because my own house always felt messy after being at hers. Another neighbour was always baking and her house was messy but clean. She was like an earth mother to us young mums. I loved her house.
I now live in a new courtyard of prestige houses with kitchens that could be clinical ie granite and steel. Some of the owners have chosen to live in what looks like a show home. Not me. My house is a home and already has a homely and welcoming feel. Everyone here is stainless steel and beige carpets. I have a heather green carpet and a large oak sideboard and tonnes of hobby stuff and precious ornaments from my children
I absolutely cannot stay tidy. I do try but other things beckon. I am always cooking and baking and am busy with my hobbies. OP you have got it right. Life is for living. I just wished I didn`t cringe when I get an unexpected visit from one of the show-house types. LOL0 -
Alfietinker - what a great post - I now exactly where you are coming from
Our house is tidy (and is only sitting tidy 'cos we had 17 for dinner on 27/12 and OH had to help along with Stepdaughter to clean up) and we haven't messed it up since - the floors don't get washed every week or swept everyday - just when we see the extra cats appearing
As long as the bathroom and kitchen are clean and tidy I am happy - as people say - the dust will there long after I am gone

Kitchen is cleaned daily, bath given a quick clean after use. My flat is always tidy I am obessed with things being in its place. People always say how tidy it is. Cannot always find things though and there is some clutter. Everything else is cleaned weekly. I deep clean on an annual basis. Nothing is ever clean enough for me but am too poor to have new carpets etc and I pull out my kitchen appliances annually to clean behind. Kitchen floor is cleaned weekly although I wish I had time to do it daily. I work all day and I study in the evening and learn to drive at weekends. I do at least one wash a day. when I stayed at home when my daughter was younger i polished and hoovered everyday! - what a nutter! I do wish it was a bit cleaner you know skirting boards etc drive me nuts!!All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0
