Shame PCinspector didn't work for you - it worked a treat on my digital camera memory card. It did give me the option of which drive to search so I would think it can work on your c drive.

Another kind chappie sent me by email another file recovery download. He was really helpful you could pm him for help. See here

Can't get any of the links to work: softpedia's main site is there and I can now find freeundelete, but I get page not available when I try to read more information or download. I get page not available for the snapfiles link, and the same when I go to the snapfiles main page. I've tried chippyminton's links too, and the site for free download he mentions is not available at the moment.

Thanks for all your help but I'm now going to cut my losses and start working out what we've got left and updating it. It'll be a fair bit of work, but the good news is that we have our largest mailing list intact and up to date. Our most complicated one, for our volunteers, is now a few months out of date, but at least we know everyone on that and have phone numbers for them all, and should be able to work out who's moved or changed what they do for us. Plus we have up to date email addresses for most of them these days ...

There was other stuff in the folder, but none of it was that important.

I just can't believe I was so stupid. :o Everyone's being very nice about it, probably just relieved it wasn't them. I'm never going to empty the trash can again ...

Oh, and I've given myself the Wally of the Century Award - we usually give a Wally of the Week Award to someone who does something daft at work, like forgetting to include something vital and obvious in a mailing but I'm convinced no-one's going to do anything THAT daft this side of the next millenium. DH says it's a bit early for that but I'm convinced it's not. This is even worse than opening Excel files with Word!

you haven't got a blocker bar coming up at the top of ie stopping the dowloads have you, or zonealarm installed?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I don't think so but I'll have another look when I get to work tomorrow. Although I've now started work on the reconstruction: for various reasons it wasn't as impossible as it might have been.
