Help, money saving newbie. How do I save of face creams?

Hi, I've been cutting back everywhere but am struggling to find cheaper face creams. I currently use olay but the cheapest I can get it at is £9.99 (x2 daytime & nighttime). I'm wondering if there's an 'old style' tip I could use to save £20 a month?

There are quite a lot of tips in the Makeup and body care section of our MEGA index sticky at the top of Old Style including recipes for all sorts of things and links to other sites. It's well worth browsing

There's also the school of thought that says, if you're saving as much as possible everywhere else, and if face cream is a luxury you dont want to live without, then £20 per month isnt a huge amount to pay for it. It all depends on whether you can afford the £20 I suppose.
What I'm trying to say is that life gets very miserable very quickly if you deprive yourself of everything all in one go, and that's when we dont stick to the budgets / targets we set ourselves.
If you do want to cut back on the cost try buying it somewhere where you get additional 'rewards' like boots points or tesco points.I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0 -
Keep taking a look on the Boots thread on the Grabbit Board. At the moment Boots are running a change one thing promotion, they have yellow leaflets which have at the back vouchers for 5 quid off Danielle Ryman, Time Delay. As these products are also BOGOF at the moment it appears that Boots are actually paying us to take these away and if you spend 10 quid then they are also giving away a 5quid boots No 7 voucherOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

My Clarins facecream is the only one that doesn't bring me out in spots but it is very pricy £30 a pot! I manage to make it last nearly six months though as the Clarins rep said I only need use a small amount. You may find you can reduce just slightly the amount you use so that it lasts longer.
As it is still a chunk of money I used to ask my MIL to get it for me for Christmas (£30 is the amount she spends on people at least so wasn't being greedy!). Otherwise I save up gift money and buy it with that. Also, if you are making savings pin money style you could allocate that to face creams.
If you don't mind changing products there are various offers on at Boots at the moment. Look in the Grabbit while you can section. Sorry I don't know how to link you to it directly.0 -
What's happened to all the "e"'s? As I view this, they've all turned to !!!! Odd.
I like www.Akamuti.co.uk for natural, organic and fair trade skincare. May not look cheap, and the 30g pots are small, but their face creams are not crammed full of water, as many are, so you only need very small amounts, and they don't just evaporate off your skin. I've just ordered a pot of coconut oil which sounds great for face care, and that was under £4 and will last me probably at least six months!!!
Also, Survana sells rose water that I use as a skin tonic, quite cheap. And also rosehip oil(£1.95 for 10ml), VERY cheap there, and is renowned for it's positive effects on skin, particularly damaged, scarred or aged skin. I use it around my eyes (it's in many eye creams).
I suggest these things as old style because they're made with natural ingredients, avoiding all the chemicals and petroleum by-products. And though they don't save money for you if you're buying Superdrug £1.99 moisturiser, say, if you're spending £20 a month on fancy creams, you actually could save money and find these things go further?0 -
Nivea face cream costs about £1 a tub. I've been using it for 30 odd years now and no ill effects. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

I use Clinique face cream and cosmetics because no other brand suits my very problematic skin (I have in fact wasted more money trying other, cheaper brands than I have spent on Clinique!). I also love the luxury of it all. I budget a lot in other areas and I would just be miserable pulling a horrible cheap-looking lippie out of my handbag!
My advice is:
1) Buy in Debenhams or Boots or anywhere else with a loyalty card scheme.
2) Buy only when there are special offers on (stock up at these times). I only buy Clinique during bonus time and I find the freebie products last me ages.
3) Snip open any tubes of cream when they are empty as there is usually loads left at the bottom.
4) Keep an eye on the press and local shops for special offers.
5) Try to find the money for your usual cream if you can't find a cheaper one that suits you as well. I know from experience that it takes ages to get skin back into good condition if the cream you have been using hasn't suited it.
6) Look out for sample sachets in magazines (my aunt gives me any she gets as she buys lots of magazines) and in shops (my local Boots has lots of sample sachets for various brands around the store).
7) If a cream doesn't suit your face use it on your body as the skin on your body usually isn't as sensitive as the skin on your face.0 -
I agree Nivea is nice, Nivea Soft is lovely oh and try Tesco Skin Wisdom De-Stress Night Cream - Lavender (calming) & Oatmilk (Re-balancing). Not expensive only a few £Panda on My Shoulder
If you can make it cheaper do so. If it's not reduced, in Primark, off ebay or free I can't have it :rotfl:0 -
Anything oatmilk/oatmeal based is very good if you have dry skin and are prone to itchy skin and/or very mild eczema. Alternatively I have heard it said (in a dermatology dept) to soak some porridge oats overnight in a little water and then use the liquid as a lotion (and presumably the porridge oats as breakfast!!!)But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green0

If you want cheap alternatives you can use baby lotion as a cleanser and vaseline as a moisturiser (great for peeling skin). Vaseline will make your skin really soft.
Failing that Superdrug sell a big bottle of moisturiser for 79p.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040
