Laptop screen very dim

I've tried adjusting the settings and brightness, and it also happens when pluged to mains.
Thanks to one and all so far for taking the time to help me

I have just booted it up to give it one last chance before performing surgery and low and behold it jumped into life. Must have been the good talking to I gave it last night
)
Now I am in two minds as to what to do about opening the s.o.b. up. I am sure it must be a dodgie connection, but do I or don't I?
Oh well I suppose it has to be done - wish me luck!
