Laptop screen very dim

I've tried adjusting the settings and brightness, and it also happens when pluged to mains.

I have just booted it up to give it one last chance before performing surgery and low and behold it jumped into life. Must have been the good talking to I gave it last night )

Now I am in two minds as to what to do about opening the s.o.b. up. I am sure it must be a dodgie connection, but do I or don't I?

Oh well I suppose it has to be done - wish me luck!
