If you mean if you fail the medical the benefit will be stopped as soon as the decsion is made. You can appeal the decision if you want.
  • If its decided you are fit for work then as I understand it you will trasnsfer to JSA,although as healy says there will be an appeals process

It depends what you mean... as Healy says..

If you fail the WCA (medical), then yes... you are not eligible for ESA.
However, you can still pass the medical & be placed in the WRAG (Work Related Activity Group) where they accept that you may be too ill to work right now but may be capable of some work in the very near future....
Oops!! Should I have posted this??? Some users don't think I shouldn't be offering advice due to my occupation!!!

    Hi there

ESA is paid for 13 weeks at the assessment rate. This is usually around £60.50 and at this point, you will be invited in for work focussed interviews.

At week 14, you will either move onto the main phase of ESA with the work related component or the support component. If you go onto Work related, you get the component of £24 added to your normal ESA. If not able to work, you get the support related component and will get £29 extra.

You will remain on ESA until you find work or are considered well enough to be actively seeking work and moved onto JSA.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

  • I thought that the assessment rate was £47 per week?

That is for single claimants under 25 - £47.95 per week.
