Gift Cards!

My son had three GAME gift cards. Unfortunatly we cant remember when he was given them. We went instore Mid November to find out the balance on each, to find two had nothing.
On the rear of the card it states that if they are not used in a 24 month period the balance disappears.
As there is nothing on the card to say when they were purchased how can this possibly be legal?
If you have no proof of purchase, which you wont have if given as a gift, the store are almost at liberty to remove the balance as and when they want!
Has anyone ever disputed this successfully?
I have e-mailed GAME on two occasions but have yet to receive a reply.

The person that gives you the gift card is meant to give you the special reciept which says how much is on the card. This will have the date the gift card was purchased on it.0

I very much doubt game or any other retailer engage in the practices you said.

Perfectly legal i'm afraid. This will be stated on the backing card that the gift card is stuck to when bought.
The company have the right to assume a card as lost if not used within a certain time period and retrieve the value as income rather than outgoing goods. 2 years is pretty reasonable.0
