Firstly....I'm no where near the problem PC....so as many suggestions on this one as possible so that I can try them tonight and I will report back tomorrow morning.
Started my PC this morning and connected to the internet via my 2Mb Virgin Broadband line. Went to MSE website .... everything fine. A couple of minutes later I can't see the page...check other websites and its the same. So, I restart the PC...connect again and its fine for a minute or so and then the same happens.
Please note that during this time the two tv icon is in the system try showing a good connection. I then go to a command prompt and try to ping a few websites. Every ping is fine except for one.... www.virgin.net.
I have done a full system scan (no problems). It is possible that Mcafee downloaded an update, but I think it was for the virus bit, so I can't see how that would cause any issues.
I do have another PC in the house and will try to get that connected to my broadband later.
Any ideas on how to solve the problem?

have spoken to virgin.net support...they claim that its a problem with mcafee. spoken to mcafee and they want me to try to go on the internet with all my security measures disabled!
Can anyone try to give me decent instructions that won't result in a trojan or a virus attacking my PC?Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

there isnt much fear of getting a virus by just going to a few websites, as long as you dont download anything.
the fact that you can ping the sites would indicate that there is software blocking your browser from connecting. Do as they say and disable mcafee, then go to a few main sites, e.g. yahoo, google, virgin.
If this works it might be that mcafee has become corrupt while updating, has happened to me before with norton, just a matter of taking it off the machine and reinstalling. The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.0 -
restart computer. dissable mcafee as Virgin said. stick on a temporary firewall (just use the XP one)... start>settings>network.. right-click your internet connection>properties>advanced> tick top box... (Protect my computer...)>OK.
connect onto the internet after that, stay on... see if everything runs smooth.
if its alrite, you got a prob. with mcafee, try re-instaling McAfee OR doing a system restore to a date when your internet was working: (start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore)
OR
if you still have the same problem, try contacting Virgin tech support again0 -
Finally worked out what the problem is. Somehow another programme (Snapstream PVS Lite) has become corrupted. A couple of minutes after I go onto broadband one of its exe files (SSW.exe) starts going nuts and causes the problems.
I have tried to uninstall, but I just receive an error every time saying that it can't find the 'install.log' file.
For now I have sorted my problem by editing the msconfig file to make sure that the ssw.exe application doesn't automatically kick itself off when the pc is started. But really would like to just get shot of the application to be honest.
Suggestions?Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

If its just the MSE site, be aware that there are problems with the site. If the site was refreshed or the page changed by a link then it quite often doesn't load properly, resulting in a blank screen or error message.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Its the internet in general. As I've said...I've fixed my problem in a roundabout way by stopping the SSW.exe file from loading when the PC is started up...but I need to get rid of the snapstream programme for my issue to be permanently fixed.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

I'll have to see if I still have the various bits to re-install.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
