Picasa3 problem

I use picasa3, but I've just acquired a ion 35mm slide/negative scanner and have transferred almost a 1000. Those are all in a mish-mash and I would like to now separate them into Christmas/Birthdays/Holidays etc. I don't seem to be able to open a new folder, yet I did when I started transferring them ie slides/negatives.. It's just a case of remembering how I did it. I did have a modicum of success but noticed that although I started to transfer, it created doubles and whilst they started to arrive in their respective categories, they left a duplicate behind. Where am i going wrong please.
