i have been informed today by sony that a warranty starts on their products from the time you place the order online and not date of receipt is this right

It's a good question.

I expect it's due to the elapsed time when Sony dispatch the goods and the delivery courier takes possession of them. It's then out of Sony's hands so it kinda makes sense? Hopefully you will only lose maybe 3 days warranty.
