OBDII scanners?

Anyone got one

Ive had the light come on twice now on my car, once when it found itself in the newbury floods and i took a gamble (which paid off) and rescued it

the other time is when i ran out of fuel !

Are they worth the investment as garages seem to charge the earth, ive seen them for around 25 or are they a waste of money at that cost

  • cheap ones are ok, the chinese copies work fine for the occasional user. Just make sure it supports the protocol that your car uses.

if you know a little bit about cars then its worth paying about 35 quid to get one that supports live data. this helps to diagnose problems.
  • if you get one, the codes are reported as DTC's and the flashing light it called the MIL light.
  • yes, I think one of these is a good investment. Just beware that the fault code won't always tell you the exact nature of the fault, you will still need some diagnostic skills.
