Not sure if this was the problem. I suppose if it was broken and shorting on the chassis then it would cause a problem like this, but I'm sure someone will enlighten me.......:D (pardon the pun)
yip this could cause the battery to discharge and send all the lights dim. the circuit needs to be complete to charge.
the bulb in the dash board must work or else the circuit will go open. this may cure your fault.
