Replacement JVC camcorder battery woes

Hi all,
I bought one of these 'vf823" replacement batteries for my MG330 camcorder. It's the type with the little wire and socket on the back.
Thing is, it won't charge. The picture in the (poor) instructions simply shows a power supply (presumably the standard JVC one) plugged in the socket and the yellow charging light on. But nothing happens in my case.
I sen't the first one back assuming it was just faulty, but this one's exactly the same.
Has anyone else got one/had one, is there a trick to charging it?
