  • As a library worker, I'd re-iterate what people have already suggested: :j

We have new books arriving every day and our systems are set up so that we automatically get (multiple) copies of a bestselling author's new book as soon as it appears in the shops. Why buy them when it's free to join the library ? (And you can recycle the book afterwards !)

My best friend and I also love relaxing with talking books on tape/CD. (Also free from many libraries.) They're better than DVDs as you can close your eyes !

We have DVDs pretty soon after they are released, but you'll find CDs won't appear straight away. We're only allowed to rent out CDs 3 months after they appear in the shops. Apparently the manufacturers think that people might occasionally copy them if they come out sooner ! :rotfl:
  • I use the library a lot...

Love watching the birds in the garden and those starlings swooping are just fantastic. We are lucky enough to have a pack, swarm, dunno what you call it (but imho it should be a swooping !)where I live and we all watch them in the afternoon before they go off to roost for the night. I also like watching the skyline and the sunsets the light is so beautiful these days . We truly don't know how lucky we all are.

what time would you say is best to look out for this? I caught it a few weeks back whilst walking the dog and it was spectacular but havent managed to time the walk since

Usually catch this about the 4 o'clock time but it may differ where you live as I think the light is different the further north you go? HTH you m'dear it really is lovely watching them !

Eeew! I love my dogs almost as much as my child but they are not allowed in the house let alone my bed, I use that for the ultimate simple pleasure...

    ...SLEEP! :rotfl:
IMHO doggies belong outdoors as nature intended :D

I find it very soothing and cheap to spend half an hour or so grooming my dogs chatting to them, they're great listeners!
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

I think Sami is right, as always!
  • Thought I'd add a syrupy simple pleasure!
My OH is away for Christmas somewhere in the Pacific. We talk everyday for an hour using Skype - not quite free I know as we pay £15 per month broadband connection.

When my children were young we had "fast food" days when I served "Macmum" burgers and fries wrapped in plain white paper which I decorated with my "macmum" logo. The girls loved their "takeaway" meals. and I was able to prepare homemade burgers and fries much cheaper than a fast food burger meal plus I knew what went into them. They are now aged 17, 20 and 22 respectively and still talk about how they loved this.

Pizza 'house' is a great night in. A few different flavour pizza's (own brand from the supermarket) and garlic bread. The kids have some softscoop icecream for pudding and some sweets to put on the top just like Pizza hut. The service is often quicker and you don't have to leave a tip!!!

if my bed is good enough for me its good enough for my dogs!
ive been know to sleep on the floor because my dogs are asleep on my bed and i dont want to wake them :rotfl: :o
  • I still have all my biscuit cutters - dinosaurs, vehicles etc.. which my children always loved doing, and I hope to get more use out of when they give me grandchildren! Making cakes was also fun.
Although my children are in their twenties, they all still like an evening with us all playing cards. We always take cards on holiday (loved playing when we were camping), and charades, and hangman and battleships.
On a purely personal note, I love knitting, and can usually find wool in the charity shops. Soft toys are quick and fun.
