Instead of just a boring sandwich for tea we sometimes have afternoon tea with our best china, tea from a pot, and little sandwiches etc to pass round. Silly I know, but even smart price biscuits are nicer served on a plate!

I would need some posh china first I think :)

If you have children then be with them. It really doesn't matter what you do with them just being there is enough. Sometimes their imaginations can transport you all elsewhere & you will all have very happy memories to look back on.Go camping with them, especially if the weather is good. It is inexpensive, comfortable, teaches them independence, planning & survival skills that could prove useful & there is just something about sitting around an open fire in a group at night time that is truly unforgettable.Keep a diary; it' s really great looking back over the years to see what you did before, it can be a good reminder to renew things annually & sometimes you can hardly believe what you did.Regards,N.

  • Not sure if you are all aware, but lately I've been getting DVD's and CD's out of the library.

It costs £1.50 to hire DVD for a whole week! That includes boxsets, e.g. Greys anatomy - got entire series 1 for only £1.50

£1.00 to hire CD for 3 weeks!

Can't be beaten. Video shops cost a fortune. And you can even order online and they text you when item is in.

Also, i'm going to invest in skyplus, I know it costs £160 to have fitted, but all the good films are on late at night so I plan to skyplus the lot then we will always have something to watch the next evening at a normal time!
  • Stuff from the local library - loads of it, all free!
Walking next door's dog - we go out into the country and it always raises my spirits.
I have to do exercises for backache, so I go to the BBC website, find all the radio 4 comedies and listen to them online while doing my stretches. It's better than TV because I don't need to keep looking at a screen, so I can just get on with the stretching and relaxation, and enjoy a good laugh.

  • For Forklift Fred...

I have Sky and they are constantly sending me details of special offers for getting friends to sign up. Last time it was to get a Sky Plus box half price which I did. Now they are offering me £50 in M&S Vouchers. Speak to someone you know who has Sky, I'm sure they will be able to get you a half price deal and they will no doubt get something out of it too.
  • for forklift fred, sent you a pm mate, let me know if you have any qs
  • how about doing a jig-saw,we always start one after the christmas dinner ,no one visiting can resist trying to do a bit.
  • Make some home made fudge and enjoy with a cup of tea and a good (library) book or a glass of homemade wine.

Spend an evening making homemade bird treats - for example coat a pine cone with peanut butter and then cover in wild bird seed or string peanuts in their shells for tasy winter treats.

Wrap up warm and go for a long walk in the park or countryside or the beach...dog optional! but bag with thermos of coffee essential ;)

Visit your parents or grandparents - you will give a lot of pleasure to them and have happy memories yourself:o
  • get friends round for a pamper evening of free massages, facials etc using up all your old beauty products. listening to free music, with everyone bringing a plate of food of their choice.
tell everyone to bring any items of clothing they no longer want and have a mini jumble sale buying and selling items between you.
browse round the wonderful traditional german xmas markets in hyde park and southbank, free to browse, bring your own mulled wine in a flask.
enjoy a few laughs watching the iceskaters falling over.
clean your own car dont pay a fiver at the carwash do it yourself.
  • When my children were young we had "fast food" days when I served "Macmum" burgers and fries wrapped in plain white paper which I decorated with my "macmum" logo. The girls loved their "takeaway" meals. and I was able to prepare homemade burgers and fries much cheaper than a fast food burger meal plus I knew what went into them. They are now aged 17, 20 and 22 respectively and still talk about how they loved this.

We also spent many days "plodging" in the local river, we'd take a picnic and search for treasures (pretty stones) to bring home. I still have a pile of those "treasures" on my dining room windowsill and they bring back lovely memories.
