Just had this years car tax renewal and its the first one since it changed. It tells me that my car is 174 G Km, so the tax is £170. I've checked the MOT cert and on the page you get with it that tells you about the CO emissions, it doesn't say anywhere that its 174, it just says PASS. How can I check this? I want to make sure I'm not paying too much.

Its not the actual emissions of your individual car that count, its the manufacturer's official figures. These are freely available. Google vehicle emissions or something similar.

    This http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/ will probably do.

Also, I think the test may be measuring CO carbon monoxide emissions, which are toxic, and would be controlled by the exhaust catalyst system, rather than CO2 carbon dioxide which is not

That is the manufacturers CO2 rating. You can get a good idea if it is correct by looking your car up on wisebuyers used car specifications, they will list the CO2 data.

It was incorrect on my cars V5, and I have contacted Vauxhall for a letter to confirm what it should be, but I am yet to go to the DVLA to ask them to change it. On my car the incorrect figure was slightly too high, it made no difference under this years Tax bands, but as from March April 09 it would put my car in the wrong band.

Of course the catalytic converter, which your car has to have, by Law, converts Carbon Monoxide into Carbon Dioxide which, surprise, surprise, we are told is so bad for us that we now have be taxed for producing it !!!!

The MOT checks the CO (Carbon Monoxide) emissions.

Your tax is based on the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions.

The CO2 emissions are not recorded on the MOT certificate.

As others have said, the CO2 information is provided by the manufacturer at time of manufacture.

Thanks folks, & thanks LandyAndy for the link. Its got me puzzled though. My car is a suzuki IGNIS, & its not listed. I'm wondering if its not listed on this site, how do they calculate the tax band?

    Try here

find your car, click on it, then look down the following page, to see the CO2 rating, This should then be the same figure as on your V5.

Thanks everyone, I did eventually find it on the registration document, & it is correct.

It sounds like you have checked your tax renewal form figure of 174 g/km against your V5 declared figure. Both these figures will always be the same for everyone, because the first is generated from the second. i.e. they are both just referencing what the DVLA have recorded for your vehicle.

If you want to check the DVLA have the correct figure, you have to contact your vehicle manufacturer. Alternatively a fairly accurate check can be made by using the wisebuyers website which I linked to in my previous post.
