Last.fm has tags for different eras and styles, you can also store your favourites on your own radio station, and delete those you don't like.

If you want particular category of music, just choose a band and scroll down to pick the tag you want. eg:

I discovered this thread the other day, it's a link to last.fm's free downloads site which somehow I've never found before. It's changed since the original post, but still something for everyone in there, and of course the tags make it easy to spot the tracks you might like.

I've been thinking it would beuseful to have a thread dedicated to the free mp3 singles artists allow you to download from their sites. I've posted a couple separately on the main board but they just get lost especailly if it's an obscure or new band people don't recognise.
I've not got time just now to go trawling, but the one I found recently are -
