Why don't you look at the 'hostel' section on the Ryanair site as it includes smaller hotels? The San Marco/Castello area is the nicest place to aim for if possible.
  • Vaporetti fares are detailed here:
    http://www.actv.it
Day or multiday tickets do not cover the Airport route. You have to buy a separate ticket.
Tip: If you just want to explore the Grand canal and adjacent areas you can get a day ticket valid for the Grand canal routes only for 6 euro valid until midnight on the day its validated. Normal day or 3 day tickets are valid for 24/72 hours from the time validated.

Can agree Hotel Gardena is a good choice if arriving on the Ryanair Bus and its easily walkable from the Bus station. Also you can get wherever you want on the vaporetti from this area.
  • If you use the vaporetti more than twice in a day and you travel on the Grand Canal at least once, then the 24hr pass is great value especially if you do go out to Murano/Burano.

Thank you for all the helpful advice... very much appreciated!
  • Hey

Me and my now wife stayed in Venice in september on our honeymoon, we had a similar budget and ended up staying at the Holiday Inn Venice East , Quarto D'Altino http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/vceqa?irs=y we were concerned about the distance from venice but when we got there it is a 2 minute walk from the Train station and you can get a train ticket for a couple of euro's into the centre of venice and its only a 15 minute train ride, The hotel itself is fantastic and only a couple of years old, the staff all speak perfect english, its exceptionally clean and they put us up in one of their Executive Rooms and it was Huge, for a budget hotel we would have paid easily double for it, being in the centre of Venice is a little more convenient but you pay for the privelege and all of the hotels are in Old buildings and i guess you take your chances, plus while we were in venice we'd see people with luggage and Kids trying to negotiate the Vaporetto's while they are full and ended up glad that that wasnt us.
I guess its what your priorities are but if you decide to stay slightly outside of Venice id certainly give this consideration.
    Enjoy

Yes I have come across the Holiday Inn Venice East, Quarto D'Altino during my search, and have seriously considered it. It does like pretty good, but we're only going to be there for 2 nights, so we've kind of decided that we'd rather be more central. Still, I know I can fall back on it if I don't find anything suitable!

    Thanks!

I always book through www.hotelscomparison.com but check on www.tripadvisor.com as there are some ropey places out there!!!!

Concerning the airport boats, they are not that cheap, for example, Airport to San Marco or the Lido is 10 Euros each for a one way trip, which works out as 80 Euros for a return trip for 4 people.

Two ways of reducing this expense (as we are talking money saving!) is to take the boat as far as Murano (halfway to the airport from Venice) or Fondemente Nova which is 5 Euros, and then buying a 24hr/72hr Vaporetti pass, which one will almost certainly buy at some point anyway - and theres loads of Vaporetti from both of these places (41/42/51/52 routes at least). However, the boat to Murano or F.N. is an hourly service, which can mean a wait. Note that there is a free bus from Marco Polo terminal to the Airport boats - it saves a 400 yard walk if nothing else, and is invaluable if you have much luggage.

The other way to save a bit of cash is to take the airport bus to Piazzale Roma - after all, there is not much to see on the Airport-Murano leg of the boat journey, and one will spend plently of time chugging around Venice on boats anyway. The bus was something like 3 euros each way when I last looked.
