Car write off... what to do now
I had an accident and my inssurance company have declared the car as write off and they have told me to send them the papers (MOT, V5) and a copy of my licence and then they would send me the money by cheque.
I just wanted to know what would happen to my remaining inssurance (still 5 months)- would the inssurance company pay me back some of the premium or can I use it to adjust with the inssurance of my new car if I go with the same company?
About the tax disc_ I had read somewhere that I can get a refund on it if there IS STILL SOME TIME LEFT ON IT. I HAVE ARROUND 4 MONTHS LEFT ON IT. How to do it? Should I go to the post office and they would pay me back or should I contact the DSA.
Many thanks

This is the link to the dvla website that explains how to apply for a refund - it's easy to do and you get the money in about 3 weeks.http://www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_tax_car.htm#30

Your whole premium is payable because you are making a claim, there is nothing for them to pay back to you. If you were claiming from a third party you could transfer your insurance to a new car with your current insurer but from what you have posted, there is no refund due to you.
Claiming back the vehicle duty is simple and hopefully that link has the form for you to print off. You must make sure that you post the form no later than the last day of this month, to get your money back for February onwards.0 -
I'm not sure of the exact details of your accident - so am not sure if that would affect any potential refund on your insurance.
I had a write off in April this year (not my fault - someone drove into the back of me). My insurance company gave me a refund on what was left of my policy & I used it to insure my next car (with the same insurance company). It's alway worth asking - you could be luckyDebt at Highest: £11,630.10 (May 2006) Debt now: £0.00 !!!!Married to the man of my dreams :A - Sat 2nd June 20070 -

Did you actually claim from your own insurance or, if you did, were they able to recover the full loss from the other driver/insurers.
This would make it a different scenario as the OP says his own insurance has written off the vehicle and are paying out. Therefore, the full premium is payable as an insurable event has occurred. This is standard with all insurance. (I didn't get anything back when my dog died three months into a policy because all his treatment had been paid for. I was still better off though as it cost rather a lot)0 -
Thanks for the replies.
And infact there was no other vehicle involved as my vehicle skided off the road in wet conditions and hit an electric pole. So here is no third party involved and the money is going off through my own policy.
