Quick Cambelt Question

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla 1.6 and thought I would have to replace the cambelt however I have been informed my car doesn't have one - it has a chain instead and this doesn't need to be replaced.

Is this right?

I happily plead complete ignorance on the subject.:o

Chain driven cars just need checking for the pulleys and tensioners, the chain itself very rarely has any issues.

If its VVTi then this is right. And regarding it needing to be changed as often as belt is nonsense.

Should it get noisy - you would notice and/or your garage would notice and then it may need replacing.

Chill out and enjoy the fact that you do not have to pay out for a cam belt change!

  • yay for cam chains.. the one on my lada managed 260,000 miles..... made the engine a bit noisier, but i just got some bigger speakers... i prefer chain engines to belt.. and pushrods are even better......

A chain cam is designed to last lifetime of the engine (that's the advantage over belts and unlike belts, they don't just snaps).

However, there are some cars with issues in chain cams (some models of Nissans) but Toyota doesn't have any such problem.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
