Army Pension and Immigration to Canada

Hi all,
My hubby retires from the Army in Feb'09 after 22 years of Service. Visas permitting we will be immigrating to Canada round about that time. Question is do we have his monthly pension paid into a UK bank account and then transfer is over (no doubt incurring bank charges and not so favourable exchange rate) or is there another, more money savie way of dealing with this? Any advice and help much appreciated!
