I'd give up Xmas, without a second thought .... crap TV, braving the crowds to get presents (that people dont really want), or ordering online and then having to wait in for deliveries (that don't arrive!), getting "caught up in the whole commercial venture" - you can tell I think the whole thing is a waste of time !! ;-) - although I accept others right to enjoy the occasion.

For me - I'd prefer to sit on a beach or by the pool soaking up the sun ! (although I'd say getting there can be a nightmare!) ....

  • Christmas is nothing to do with the birth of christ. It is all to do with money.
The true meaning of christmas has gone long ago, hardly anyone goes to church anymore, the whole meaning of christmas is PROFIT for retailers it starts in october or even earlier in some shops.I would give up christmas in a heartbeat and i generally use my parents caravan for hols in norfolk once a year although i can holiday home just as well.If xmas was to be once every five years it would be much more enjoyable it would be a treat we could look forward to and save up for and have 1 big blow out with family and friends.
instead of the year in year out oh here it comes again more expense attitude we all have..just my idealistic idea oh how i wish it could come true.

I unfortunately had to click "give up summer holiday". Personally I would give up Christmas like a shot but their would be a riot at home. Christmas is for the children. :(
  • Moved down under 18 months ago and this'll be our 2nd Christmas in Perth - children still too young to understand about Christmas, the day will probably be spent in the pool with a seafood lunch and a bottle or two of bubbly. Last year the in-laws came over and the temp hit 44C!! Put them off coming again this year but we only expecting 32C this year. We miss getting together with our families over the Christmas period but don't miss the weather one bit, besides we have two young boys now to keep us busy!!

Can this be nominated for the most bizarre poll ever?! ;) There is one main option missing!

Surely in the first instance, unless you were spectacularly dim and bad with money, you'd cut back the spending on both, so therefore spend less at Christmas and on the holiday.

Personally all our holidays cost many times more than Christmas spending, but I'd not give up either!. Surely a "cut spending on both, but still have Christmas and a holiday" would be a worthy option?
  • I love Christmas, my 3 sons come home to spend a few days, and i love to buy them presents, but GULP i spend more than £600. NO NO NO, you are not going to make me say!!!!! maybe we should have a poll to see how much we spend!! can i say is £600 not low for say a family of 4 on a holiday abroad?

I wouldn't give up either, just spend less, as we're doing. I've never spent £600 on Christmas! Blimey, who's spending that much!

    Sarah

I reckon £200 per child is quite average(in these days of xboxs and wiis:rolleyes:), add on family presents, wrapping, replacement decorations, extra food and booze et voila the average 4 or 5 person family will easily spend £600+
all i can say is thank god we spend most of yule tide at our parents, drinking their booze n eating their food we just do our usual supermarket food shop :T so its just presents that cost us
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

I think Sami is right, as always!
  • Well it's an easy decision really because if you give up spending on Christmas - it's still Christmas isn't it? You can still watch Xmas TV, visit friends and family, go to church if that is your thing. You still have to eat "something" so just chose something cheap from normal food range that's turkey based (one of those all-year turkey baster joint things for £2.99). Roast dinner veggies etc come under normal food anyway. Xmas pud/ cake/ pies etc - I can live without them - always too full after a roast dinner anyway.

Spending on presents? - yes as someone suggested - make the present the holiday! Ask other people to give you money for Xmas and spend it on their return presents.
  • As a Catholic, I think Christmas should be a time of year about family and spending time together not about what new presents you get. Christmas can be done for a lot less than £600. Parents have to take a lot of the blame when their own children expect ridiculously expensive gives at Christmas! My parents never went overboard and I never expect anything expensive! A lot of kids have completely lost the meaning of Christmas and have no idea why people celebrate, how many people actually attend church?
