  • I'd give up Christmas, I'd rather give pople a well thought out gift for their Birthdays than get flusterd and broke trying to think of something for everyone at Christmas, at least Birthdays are a bit more spread out throught the year.
As for holidays, my Mum and Dad often come and stay at our house while we are away (we are luck to live near the Lake District). They get a free holiday and we get free house sitting. They do have to look after our dog but they like dogs so thye get a free pet thrown in and we save on kennel fees. All it reall costs us is a few bottles of wine but even then Mum offers to replace what they have drunk! (we don't let her)
  • :santa2: :snow_laug We all need something to look forward to in the middle of our cold, damp winters, so a low cost Christmas would have to stay. :xmassmile :rudolf:

In summer, it is much easier to get away from it all virtually cost free (camping, country walks, making the most of your garden - or somebody elses, very cheap days out etc), with out paying out hundreds of pounds.

We might only get a bit of sun compared to other countries, but you could stop the kids pestering you about it by telling them to think how much you would all be doing for the environment by not going on an expensive holiday. icon10.gif:confused:icon7.gif

I wouldn't give up either, just spend less, as we're doing. I've never spent £600 on Christmas! Blimey, who's spending that much!

I am.....and then some. I suppose it depends how big a family is as to how much Christmas costs, it can vary so much for everyone.

I could never give up christmas...how would I explain that to the kids:confused:

    Holidays cost MORE than Christmas.

We're going to Egypt, cheap deal £250 per person, family of four, bam £1,000 just like that. And that's a CHEAP deal. Add in the trip to Cairo (£100 p/p), food and spending for a week it's going to cost nearer £2,000.

Go Christmas week and it would be £2,000 just for the flights + hotel.

I'd give up Christmas any time. I don't overspend anyway and I would be very very happy just having time off work for a break with a sunday lunch type meal with the family and forget all the presents. I don't even buy 'special' food in - maybe one box of mince pies.

My holidays cost much, much more than Christmas does for me, but I only have 4 people to buy for. I spend maybe £250 and contribute alcohol and games to my bro who we all go to lunch for.

Holidays on the other hand, well including spends this year's came to well over £1500.

Good for you, I have a holiday account which I have a standing order set up for. I treat my monthly holiday payments as if they were a bill being direct debited.
