Also, in Martin's article it says you need to bank with Nationwide to apply for a card. This isn't true. I got one without banking with Nationwide and I also get online access to transactions even though customer services reckon it doesn't work without a Nationwide bank account!!
I second that. I now have a Nationwide current a/c, but got my Nationwide CC years before I got my a/c without any problems. Also was able to use online banking wihtout a problem"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
Did the BT no problem with Nationwide and have also now received cheque book and card. When I originally set up the online banking I couldn't see anything and had to notify them - they discovered that for some reason I had been issued with 2 customer ids, altered this somewhere and a few days later, I could see my credit card and access it online - used Egg Money Manager to keep all the details safely stored.
On Friday it locked me out - spoke to customer services who said I had entered my details incorrectly. Forgive me for being dim, but I was using Egg Money Manager, had been for two weeks without a hitch, has EMM decided to enter the details incorrectly? ???
The only solution, apparently, was to re-register. Did this on Friday, details arrived this morning - entered my details again .... locked out again. >:(. Have just filled out the details for the third time - third time lucky and all that - fingers crossed.
I travel overseas at the weekend therefore will hopefully be able to spend without a hitch as money transfered in to current account to cover my trip.

As Nationwide’s debit card doesn’t charge a cash withdrawal fee or, obviously, interest, it is outright winner. Yet you need to bank with Nationwide to use it and while its account isn’t bad, it’s not the best buy. (Follow this link for an article on the top current accounts).
For most people getting a credit card is easier. Nationwide’s credit cards' cash withdrawal charges are lowest at 1% of the amount withdrawn with a minimum £1, although this rose to 1.25% and £1.25 in June 2004. Unfortunately, last year it started charging interest even if you pay off the card in full.
Just a quick note. Im slightly confused why - but when someone said "martins article says you need to open an account to apply for a card" the key (I've cut and pasted the paras from the article) is you need to open an account to get the debit card, not the credit card

Just back today from overseas. Top tip - make sure that you tell Nationwide that you are going, where and when, otherwise you could find a stop being placed on your card (a little embarrassing when stood in a queue!). I had told them and I had the nationwide cc and debit with me - former for purchases, latter for cash - both went reasonably okay but both were refused at least once. Apparently this can happen to prevent card fraud, I had notified them but it can still happen - the debit card was refused, went to a cash point and the balance was fine and let me take the money out, not sure what happened there!
Also, it may be obvious, but make sure that you have enough money available (in the current account and on the cc if you have been balance transferring) - just back from the US where bargains galore were to be had and I nearly came a cropper by not having money in the right account.
Take the telephone number with you just in case (international number on their site - also useful if you don't want to pay extra for the 0845 number as it can then use any inclusive minutes that you have).
Enjoy your holiday.
