Is it true that if you dont have any money on your debit card account you can still get cash back in stores?

You could do in theory, but if there are no funds in your account then surely you will get charges etc....dangerous game to play?0

I would have thought your card would be declined?0

I think it would depend on the type of card. Visa electron would decline but normal visa debit would go through as long as you weren't already overdrawn. As others have said though would lead to charges so a better option would be to see if you can arrange a small temp overdraft if you're really struggling??0

Im not thinking of doing that its just on a show that i watches last night it said even though this student had £3000 overdraft that he already used the bank contuniued to let him overdraw by going to the local shop buying something then getting £60 cashback every day and it lasted for 6months until he was in over his head.
I thought surely this cant be true why would banks let something like that happen.:A0 -
I can only assume that the case you mention was to do with a system glitch... ordinarily no... it would have declined the card whether in a cash point or in the shop. Why it didn't the bank would need to investigate as it ought to have.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Years ago yes it was true but now most systems are live. Another trick was to cash a check at the post office.Barclaycard 3800

I think this is true but it's due to the cards being cash guaranteed. I'm guessing (and I'll probably be corrected) that's why banks make the payment good i.e they do it at petrol stations but you are charged something like £8 per transaction and then an overdrawn fee on top. Maybe the supermarket falls into the same catergory?LBM 2 - 27.05.09.
