Wooden train set

Options
I want to buy my son a wooden train set for his birthday. I have seen them in Woolworths, ELC and tesco and they all seem pretty much the same and seem to be compatable with each other.

Can anyone recommend any other shops that sell them? I am also prepared to buy online if the deal is a good one.

Thanks in advance

  • Ikea did one that was compatable with Brio about 3 years ago. I assume that they still do this one.

At the risk of sounding like a snob I looked around most shops at the wooden tracks as my son is train mad. I wont say only go for brio because they are all compatible, but, i would recommend you avoid the tracks with the peg pieces rather than the complete piece, the connections are different where the track joins together. The pegs snap off far too easily & can get put in mouths etc especially if you have little ones. The Tesco one is complete pieces, asda isnt, tchibo did one but im not sure about the price.
Boots have some on half price at the moment & it is the brio. Argos also did a set which was complete pieces. Actual trains though it makes no difference they all seem as good as each other & tesco is the cheapest place I have found for them, they also do a great range of accessories.
    Hope that helps

We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

We originally got my DH a Thomas starter kit from ELC, and added loads of pieces from Tesco - they have loads there, seems good quality. Its compatible and they have lots of extras like bridges, turntables (or whatever they;re called!) at reasonable prices!

I second the comments about getting solid wood pieces rather than the plastic peg pieces.

Have a look on ebay for special packs. We found we had lots of straight bits of track, so I bought some curves to make more interesting layouts. Let relatives know you are collecting it, and you might find they'll buy a bridge or a station or something for birthday/Christmas gifts.

My eldest got a basic starter pack for his second birthday, then got loads more as gifts over the years. We've now got a huge box of it and I had to say "please no more Brio" to relatives who buy gifts! He's 9 years old now and still plays with it, so it's certainly very good value for money.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Thank you to everyone for their positive comments. I will look in to the Boots Brio and Tesco ones.
