Can anyone help- I have just done a virus scan on my mums Dell laptop and it looks like there is a trojan horse virus on there - 5 files have come up as infected.
There is AVG anti virus on the laptop-but it seems to have slipped through.
What should we do?
Not very tech minded unfortunately, so please treat me gently!!:o

Download it on another computer and put it on a memory stick or a CD or something. You will also need to download the update for it as well if you do it like that http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp0
-
full instructions for malwarebytes
- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Chalk up yet another fail for AVG. Will people ever learn that it's complete dross?
Once you've followed the instructions regarding Malwarebytes, uninstall AVG and install Avast instead which is also free but actually works.0 -
The more people who use it, the more people who'll have problems... and there are many AVG users here - look in other AV support forums (if they are brave enough to show pleads of help with removing malware).Chalk up yet another fail for AVG. Will people ever learn that it's complete dross?
... main problem with AVG is that many users dont know the free version doesnt detect ad/spyware0 -
AVG is a great piece of software, but it does state the freeware version is not a live scanner.0

I'd go to
www.windowsupdate.com
and make sure that all the latest updates are applied , click on "express" and update , then reboot if need be and then do express again to be sure its done them all , then do it again , choose "custom" this time and look under hardware for any updatesEx forum ambassador
